    School Uniform

We should have school uniforms because it saves a lot of money. I have proof from http://articles.latimes.com... that school uniforms cause 50% of bullying and we could put a stop to that if students today where school uniforms. Also, to buy a set uniform with school deals, the outfits will most likely not be as expensive as if they were going to buy the latest trends of fill their closets will clothes they will not wear in school.

In school we are not allowed to retain some of our basic...

That public schools should enforce uniforms

Before i begin allow me to provide the following definitions: Enforce: to enact a mandate. Should: Moraly or logicly right. Also the affirmative has the burden of proving how enforcing uniforms is benifitial on balance. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Cont 1: Uniforms will affect the education of the poor. When asking for students to dress a certain way in order for them to attend that school would definately hurt the poor. Education might be hurt or even loss due to the fact that money is a big problem. The negative believes that everyone should be given the opportunity to learn regardless of how they look, dress, or even how rich or poor they are. Cont 2: Uniforms restrics and decreases freedom. In school we are not allowed to retain some of our basic rights such as the freedom of speech or press ect.. If we enforce uniforms, surely we are taking away the freedom of creativity. Some people dress how they feel, or what they belive in. Some dress for a special someone or to enact what has happend to them. Its like adjusting what you wear to who you are. Cont 3: Uniforms go agaisnt the idea of diversity. When switching to uniforms we are reliving the past. We wanted only one race to rule: the whites. (KKK). When switching to uniforms, we first would need someone to decide what the uniform should be. When that person decides what the uniform is,then he enacts it. This is wrong for two reasons. First, the person who decides would have too much power on his hands. Second, the person who enacts the decided uniforms is saying that his decision is right and no other forms of clothing may be chosen. Cont 4: Uniforms do not solve our current problems. Some might say that enacting uniforms would help prevent discrimination by clothing and other such. Thats not true because some decide to alter the uniforms by either slight effects or major ones. Uniforms itself is a style so yes, judging still happens. For these four reasons i urge a negative vote.

    Kids should wear uniforms

Hello Con, I'm glad that you have accepted my debate, I believe that kids should wear school uniforms for several reasons. Firstly, school is an institution for educating children(dictionary.com). School is not a place for children to wear what they want to, it's place where they are educated for their future lives. As you have mentioned: "It teaches them from a young age that everyone should act the same, and dress the same." I am yet to find how wearing school uniforms can affect the children to act the same. Wearing school uniform makes the school look more organised and shows pride for each schools. Wearing school uniform also allows other students/parents to easily notice where a child is from. For example, this is probably a really bad one, a child is seen getting into an accident where his/her parents are nowhere to be found. If the child is wearing a school uniform, one can notify the school immediately. Of course there are variables to this, but what I am trying to prove is that wearing Firstly, school is an institution for educating children(dictionary.com). Talking about your harsh reality, I think that judgements made by what a child wears is harsher than wearing the same clothes like everyone else. As children are not forced to wear school uniforms, they will, of course, wear different clothes than everybody. Some will wear fancier than others. This can lead to judgements made by other kids, and this leads to bullying. Sources: http://www.bullyingstatistics.org... I look forward to your next argument to be made.

Schools should not require their students to wear uniforms

(rebuttal for first paragraph): But how does it decrease such rates? You are stating the effects without the causes. You need to explain each point because it seems as if you are rambling about a random tangent you do not have any idea about. It does not help that you did not provide any citations or evidence. Therefore, who is Virginia Draa exactly? Is she biased? Does her school allow uniforms? What is her credibility? What exact study is that from? Because, right now I do not have a counterargument for this section if you are unwilling to explain your points. (rebuttal for second paragraph): Once again, WHAT STUDY? It seems like you are making this up. You may want to read my first paragraph again because it seems as if you have not already: We already have catholic and private schools - usually those schools require their students to wear uniforms to attend that certain school. Then we have public schools - which do not require uniforms. At the current state we are in, everyone has the CHOICE if they want to go to a private school and wear a uniform or go to a public school and don't. Ammendment 1 grants every american citizen the following freedoms: Speech, Press, and Religion. People dress to represent themselves as a person. Their clothing tells peers who they are through expression. How someone dresses is their freedom of speech, because they are speaking of themselves through their clothing. If all schools required students to wear uniforms - then our younger generation will have their CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS TAKEN AWAY. This is against the law and is not allowed - or puts a good name upon our country in question - USA. At least where we are at the moment, students have the CHOICE if they want to go to a school that requires them to wear a uniform or not. They CHOOSE if they accept the fact that if they go to a spacific school, then they may not have all of their rights while atttending. Where we are now is fair, everyone have freedom of choice, and the choise of what to do with their rights; and that is what being an american citizen is all about. Even if schools did want to require their students to wear uniforms - where would they get the money to buy such uniforms on manufacture them? You see, if this were reality then it would be a MAJOR financial, and constitution violation and issue." " A 1999 study conducted by experts from Texas Southern University showed that bullying incidents increased by as much as 12%, after the implementation of mandatory uniform wearing. Echoing this sentiment is a 2007 study published in the Southwest Journal of Criminal Justice. According to the research, assaults increased by as much as 14 incidences yearly, right after the introduction of school uniforms. A similar finding was discovered by the Office of Education, Evaluation, and Management of the Miami-Dade County. Violence, especially in the middle schools, increased by a hundred fold after the students were required to wear uniforms." (mentioned below as well). (rebuttal for third paragraph): What about poor families who cannot afford such uniforms? They cannot afford a certain outfit and therefore cannot recieve education due to their unwealthiness? That is DISCRIMINATION and it is ILLEGAL AND UNCONSTITUTIONAL, as I have mentioned previously. Once again, where are you getting your information from? Please site your evidence. "People who are for uniforms say that it promotes social conformity, so the less-to-do don’t have to be pressured to keep up with their well-off contemporaries. Unfortunately, it does not work that way. They still are forced to spend because the school requires their children to wear costly uniforms." More facts and statistics: "The path to adult development is honed throughout the duration of early schooling. However, your transition towards adulthood can be hindered with uniforms. Since it is mandatory, you are not given the chance to decide for yourself, which is one of the hallmarks of adulthood. You know you are an adult when you are given the freedom to choose – whether you like this or that. When you were young, you know you are not an adult yet because your parents (aka the ‘adults’) made the decision for you. However, when you are restricted to wearing uniforms in school, you are denied the opportunity to make decisions for yourself. After all, you do not have a choice because the others have already made it for you." "Uniforms aim to give everybody a homogenous look, right? Instead of improving a student’s self-image because he looks just like the others, it actually does the opposite. Students have different weights, body types and heights. Whenever one looks at himself in the mirror, he depreciates his self-image because he feels like he doesn’t look his best. Unfortunately, this case is often seen in girls, who feel ‘embarrassed’ when they go to school in uniforms. According to development psychologists, ladies have the huge tendency to compare how they look in uniforms. This is especially the case when the student sees herself to have a curvy or plus-size body. This also happens to girls who deem themselves very short or very tall." "A 1999 study conducted by experts from Texas Southern University showed that bullying incidents increased by as much as 12%, after the implementation of mandatory uniform wearing. Echoing this sentiment is a 2007 study published in the Southwest Journal of Criminal Justice. A similar finding was discovered by the Office of Education, Evaluation, and Management of the Miami-Dade County. Violence, especially in the middle schools, increased by a hundred fold after the students were required to wear uniforms." "Short skirts can sometimes be too short, that a gust of wind can easily expose your underpants. Some uniforms are made from unpleasant fabrics that will make you itch from the first class to the last class. Some are so badly-designed that they can make the wearer look bigger or pudgier. Yes, there are so many things that can make uniforms so horrendously uncomfortable." "Those who are in favor of uniforms believe that they are cheaper alternatives, because the students have to wear them every day. That is actually a point of contention, as uniforms are very costly too! In fact, Americans spend about $249 on uniforms yearly. When you compound all the people that have to buy school uniforms, it totals to $1 billion annually. That’s the cost of the Chicago Cubs, LA Lakers, and the Toronto Maple Leafs (each team, of course.) Heck, you can buy the Solomon Islands for $1 billion." "Children are always taught to break free and stand out. But with uniforms, the schools are actually lobbying for the opposite. Uniforms actually force students to kowtow to the rules of conformity. After all, a pupil needs to wear something that is prescribed for everybody, not something that expresses his individuality.People who are for uniforms say that it promotes social conformity, so the less-to-do don’t have to be pressured to keep up with their well-off contemporaries. Unfortunately, it does not work that way. They still are forced to spend because the school requires their children to wear costly uniforms." "The First Amendment of the US Constitution guarantees one the freedom of religion, assembly, and right to petition. Most importantly, it assures a citizen’s freedom to expression. Unfortunately, this is inherently violated by requiring the students to wear uniforms. Freedom of expression is not just about saying what you want to say, it’s also about seeking and imparting ideas, regardless of limits and boundaries. Expressing your ideologies, beliefs and philosophies, unfortunately, are hindered by school uniforms. That’s because you are forced to wear something you don’t believe in. You are no longer given a chance to express your ideas, which you can impart simply by choosing the clothes you like to wear." "There have been numerous polls made to determine the acceptance of school uniforms, and most of them show that students are against them. Take the case of the Harford County Public School students, wherein 87.9% are in strong disfavor of the mandatory uniform system. The parents of school children feel the same way as well. According to the Rasmussen Reports, 47% of parents are against school uniforms, compared to the 41% who are in favor of school dresses. 12% still remain undecided on the issue." For another, previous uniforms can be handed down to...

    Uniforms in public schools

I happily accept this debate and send warmest regards to my honored opponent. First, let me cede the initial premise stated by my opponent - school uniforms suck. This is a universal truth, and I don't think there's anything that can make school uniforms not suck. However, the same can be said about many aspects of high school, and what can also be said about those self-same aspects is that while they may suck, the benefits outweigh the suckiness. During the course of this debate, I will prove that school uniforms are a lesser evil which should be tolerated and encouraged, even in public schools, in service to the greater good. My opponent states that school uniforms are "itchy and uncomfortable". Even if I ceded this point, the benefits would still outweigh the inconvenience, but I don't think that these are necessarily inevitable truisms. As a student who was subjected to the formalwear of a catholic school uniform, I can attest that one mostly gets used to it over time. I would frequently come home from school and spend the rest of the evening still wearing my button up shirt, grey slacks and black shoes while playing with my toys or banging away at my computer. Even with the option right in front of me, I didn't bother to get changed because I was simply used to wearing them. The exceptions, of course, were the tie and the shoes - very uncomfortable indeed. But students spend the vast majority of their time sitting, so the shoes weren't too much of an issue, and the fact that I would take off my tie at the end of the day may have actually had a positive psychological impact on me. I associated wearing the tie with the "serious business" of school, and taking it off with "business is over now, relaxing is here". One generally wants a student to think of school as a place to get serious about learning, so such a benefit can't be overstated. My opponent's second argument is that uniforms are expensive. There's some truth to this; most uniform stores aren't too shy about gauging their customers a bit when they know that those customer have no choice but to pay it. However, are they really that much more expensive than regular street clothes? I would assert that they're not. For one thing, you don't have to buy them as often - once a year tops, and even then only if puberty is playing some very mean tricks on the child in question. For another, previous uniforms can be handed down to little siblings or sold to younger students to recoup some of the money, which is less possible with street clothes because they'd be "out of fashion" after a time. Which brings us to another point my opponent made, that uniforms suppress individual expression (I'll get to the allergy point in a moment). This is, by definition, obviously true, but not necessarily a bad thing. Expressing emotions and personality aren't always appropriate in school. A student is there to receive information, not transmit it, and it is hard enough to cover all the course material in a 45 minute class without the distractions of students' processing one anothers' nonverbal clothing messages. Compounding that issue is the fact that some of those messages can be in direct opposition to one another, leading to taunts and fights. And the messages might make statements that students don't want to make, like "I'm too poor to afford the best clothing", making them vulnerable to bullying and teasing. Uniforms eliminate all of these problems in one swoop. Beyond just the tie, a uniform sets a tone for a person. New military troops often admire themselves in the mirror after putting theirs on for the first time. Firefighters and police officers are always the most recognizable when in uniform. Uniforms command respect, reinforce purpose and ultimately help make people better at what they're doing. If one is allergic to uniform fabric, that is a special case. I'm quite certain that such a disability could be taken into account, and an alternate material can be used to accommodate the special circumstance. Lastly, my opponent talks about the difficulty in telling people apart while in uniform. This is, at worst, a small annoyance, and really only affects chance meetings. In classes with assigned seating, one knows where each student is, and in classes without it, one usually sits with their friends anyway. In the lunch hall, people agree in advance where to meet or have a routine established. Missing out on a couple of small conversations (or even perhaps making a new friend because of the misunderstanding?) is a small price to pay for all the benefits a uniform brings to the table.

You have not been wearing uniforms for 1000000000 years. And uniforms do reduce bullying and you aren"t thinking about the people with less money because second hand uniforms don"t look too bad but second hand clothes look old and scruffy so they"d get badly bullied.

school unifroms should not be banned

Uniforms are clothes given to students by the school to wear. However, some say that uniforms should be banned ,but I do not agree with this .They should be allowed. Firstly, school uniforms creates unity and pride. All students will wear the same thing which will create a stronger team mentality.Imagine a place where everyone is from the same school but they do not feel unity. How would you feel being in that situation. In addition to that they are a form of identification.Identification at sometimes can be very crucial.Let us say a kindergarten 2 child is lost but is wearing a uniform.People can identify which school that student comes from. Also school uniforms can save parents' money.Instead of having to buy clothes every now and then, parents can buy 2 sets of uniforms which will do for the children for up to 3 months. Uniforms reduce bullying .One may bully another because of what clothes the other wears.School uniforms create equality. At school it doesn't matter which type of family one comes from.Everyone is equal.I think those who say they should be banned want to show off how rich they are and bully other people. If they want a school of only rich kids ,let them go and create their own school! So imagine being bullied for clothes. How would you feel? Moreover ,research has shown that school uniforms increase focus on learning. If everyone is wearing uniforms ,all students will look at one another's clothing. It is also said that school uniforms make schools a safe place.Did you know?In some non uniform schools students have been killing each other over expensive clothing.Imagine being in a school like that.Full of murderers, thugs, bullies and robbers!I don't know whether people who don't support uniforms understand safety. It is a very true fact that school uniforms take out dress competitions.Am sure you will all agree to this.Students may argue with each other over who has the best clothes.Am sure most people don't like a competitive atmosphere.Especially clothes.

    School Uniforms

Dress codes do not take as much effort as you might think. As long as what you are wearing is appropriate, then you are all set. Some uniform codes are quite severe, and in my opinion over the top. They limit the creativity of children so much that when all is said and done, no one is unique. There is also no need to buy new clothes. Do adults buy new clothes every day that they work? No, they do not. Do you buy new clothes every day in the summer? Of course not! It is not difficult to choose what you are going to wear in the morning, just be yourself! Dress codes are just one of the many options that a school could choose. Instead of a dress code a school could just have a policy that clothing needs to be appropriate. Will that cost the school anything? Absolutely not. Schools need to make sure that they are nurturing the creativity of children, not obliterating it with restrictions.
