Private Schools Should Have Students Wear Uniforms

Hello. Simple debate, I will be Pro and I will argue that students should wear school uniforms in private schools. Definitions Uniform - Identical clothing issued to school students to wear during school. Student - Person who is recieving an education whether through school, or by other means. Rules 1. Forfeit will resut in an auto loss and all 7 points going to the other person. 2. No semantics. 3. No trolling. 4. Nothing that would be considered innapropriate to the average DO member i.e plagiarism.

    Students should wear uniforms.

As to your comment in your previous post, in 2013 a student was charged with indecent exposure when said student paraded around the Carnegie Mellon University half dressed. My first point is that students are often pressured to wear the 'right clothes'. Sometimes to the extreme of bullying. This would not happen however because the students would be dressed in the congruent uniform. to back that up, a study was done with more 1,500 teens and 64% were bullied because of clothing. Thus bullying would go down. Secondly, if the school leaders decide on a females uniform that us not tight, revealing, etc., then the male students would pay more attention in class. The sexual offenses would go down as well. One study was done by the u.s. Department of Education and it states that sexual offenses fell 74% after the uniform policy took affect. My final reason is that it would flat out help behavior. School crime, fights, and as I mentioned, sexual offenses would all significantly come down. In the study I already mentioned This would not happen however because the students would be dressed in the congruent uniform. to back that up, a study was done with more 1,500 teens and 64% were bullied because of clothing. Thus bullying would go down. Secondly, if the school leaders decide on a females uniform that us not tight, revealing, etc., then the male students would pay more attention in class. In the study I already mentioned school crime fell 36%! After they started with a uniform! Fights decreased by 51%! And sexual offenses fell 74%. So since I see no valid reason to do otherwise, uniforms should be made mandatory! Thank you.

I am repeating myself because it applies to what you are arguing. My entire opening argument explained many benefits of implementing school uniforms, but you chose to drop ever argument.

I have clearly won this debate because in debate.org...

    School Uniform

I have clearly won this debate because in debate.org rules if you miss a round you automatically lose, but I will still talk about school uniforms. Kids everyday are getting bullied and cloths are a big part of that. Also it saves a ton of money they can have more class field trips and do more school activities.

A poor family could at least afford 249$ for one kid, and...

Students should be required to wear school uniform.

Thank you for your arguments. As your 1st argument, that it will violate students' freedom of expression, may be true, it can be true in a harmful way. For example, this will stimulate the popularity hierarchy once students could dress whatever they want. The ones with the fancy clothes could easily become the top dogs of the school, which wouldn't happen if uniforms were banned. And the 1st amendment says that yes, there may be freedom of expression, but then why don't we ban uniforms altogether? There are lots of private schools out there that still use uniforms. Why don't we just ban uniforms in those schools? As for your 2nd argument, yes, uniforms are expensive, but normal clothes that popular girls and boys buy to show everyone that they are "cool" are also expensive, maybe even more. They buy them in loads. Open any girl's wardrobe and you would find tons of dresses and jeans that would cost much more than 249$, I can assure you. And besides, even if some students do not buy so much clothes, this is still only a one-time thing. They just need to buy it once, and that is it. For just 249$ a kid, we could substantially improve our national debt. A poor family could at least afford 249$ for one kid, and if they can't (which is highly unlikely) they will not be denied the opportunity. The school could pay for them. And finally, for your last argument, that it causes bullying, that is highly unlikely as students will not wear the uniform outside of school. If students want to express themselves, which you had said yourself, then they wouldn't wear the uniforms unless required. Therefore students would only wear them inside school. And even if this is not true, our nation isn't so corrupted that fistfights and riots would break out just because of uniforms. And bullying is mainly inside a single school, not a rival school student picking on another school student. No one would bully a stranger that they don't even know, unless they are a gang member, and gang members don't go to school. Before I end, I would like to add to my previous contentions. Since you have not given me your opinions on my contentions, I assume you agree with me. If not, then please tell me why you do not believe so. 1. Discipline/honor It creates a discipline needed for the real world, and it also gives the atmosphere a more honorable feeling. Students would feel more honored to don their school uniform. It creates a sense of pride. 2. Eliminates popularity system By closing the gaps between the well-dressed students and the poor-dressed students by giving them all a mutual uniform, we are making friendship more easier. A common barrier of friendship is popularity, and popularity is partly caused by clothing. Once students all wear the same uniform, they can accept others for their inside, not outside. 3. Lastly this generates revenue for the government. As my opponent has kindly stated, uniforms cost 249$. Imagine all the schools in the country, with huge numbers of students enrolling, multiplied by 249$. That can generate pretty big revenue. And while this can inflict some financial damage to poor families, it truly does not really hurt them, as 1. They should be able to scrape at least 249$, and 2. if they can't the school will pay for them. Thank you.

Just take for example the cross they bore on their right...

That public schools should enforce uniforms

No problems have ever resulted from uniforms. and if they have, my opponent should give me them. Since casual wear has been known to cause problems I urge your vote. What you don't understand is that if you do enforce uniforms, people cant afford it and will obviously do something desperate to get it leading to more problems. What I understand is uniforms are designed to be cheap. To solve the economic problem. That was the main point of uniforms. True, the Nazi were remembered for their killing but also the uniforms. Just take for example the cross they bore on their right arm. Whenever we see that cross we think of the Nazi's and Hitler. So, we should take away military uniforms because they entitle too much power? When we neglect uniform we do not neglect equality because how can you achieve equality by FORCING uniforms on to people that's supposedly going to stop stereo types. Voting rights for blacks were forced upon people. Is that a lack of freedom? Uniforms do carry power because they represent the authority that chose it. So, Taco Bell is going to take over the world because of their uniforms. When I walk into Taco Bell, I don't think that the uniforms are a sign of evil. It's organized. My opponents rebuttals are based on that uniforms are designed to destroy freedom. Uniforms are used everyday at work. Why? To represent unity. Not evil.

    Students should wear uniforms.

Exactly, and just about all clothes are distracting. Though if you're all wearing the same thing there is nothing interesting to distract you. I would like to point out that you are extremely close to a fallacy by the fact that this is not about free speech, this is school uniforms, and I will slightly concede that there is a extremely slight loss of personality. However, it is not gone as some people would have you believe, and besides, if a student truly needs clothing to express themselves, they honestly probably don't have that much to express, I realize that sounds outrageously rude but it's true. If you would be so kind as to refer to my post in the comments section, you will find a extension on this, the comment reads that it is directed towards 'superburit0'. Thank you.

school unifroms should not be banned

Don't you get it?Let's say there's a soccer match and everyone is wearing the same thing.People will support their own team. While if they are wearing casual, some may go to an extent of supporting the other team. This makes them less proud of their school.I think you haven't researched enough on non-uniform schools.Students force their parents to buy new clothes every now and then to impress their friends which wastes money! It seems you don't know that there are different types of bullies. Some are clothing bullies.By the way I said it reduces bullying.I think you don't want to wear the same things as others are wearing because you are a show off.School is a place of equality. No matter what race you are from or what clothes you wear.Non uniform schools defy this rule.A lower class family's child may get bullied of what they wear.In addition to that safety is more important than comfort.I think you don't understand this.I also want to add another point.Uniforms increase expectations of student from themselves. They tend to behave better when dressed neatly. Also ,some students may break the school dress code and may end up wearing inappropriate clothes.Give me some ways in which students can be identified apart from uniforms.Uniforms have improved attendance .Poor children feel uncomfortable going to school because they will be mocked at!How would you feel being one of the poor children?School uniforms create pride.Children feel proud of themselves.By the way they also remove dress competitions or peer pressure. For your information,86 percent of the parents in US support uniforms.School uniforms reduce gang activity. For example, there might be a gang of blue.Students must wear blue. Moreover school uniforms are a source of protection. An intruder can be easily identified at a school where there is uniform. While in non-uniform schools, the intruder may disguise him or herself as a student. Also students may wear T shirts saying bad stuff.Like you are my slave .

    say no to uniforms

Why would a uniform prevent you from expressing your feelings? While a uniform may take away your ability to express yourself via the clothes you wear, you just then have to express yourself in other, more tangible ways. Does a uniform prevent you from growing your hair long or cutting it short? You can wear buttons or color your hair or wear different color socks... all kinds of things! Learning to be different when everyone looks "the same" will be a valuable life lesson for you. It would not be boring. It will be the best thing that's ever happened to you as a person. Plus, you don't have to spend so much money on clothes and use it instead on cell phones or video games or Pokemon cards or whatever you kids do nowadays. Maybe you don't have to worry about getting randomly killed by a gang for wearing the wrong color too. Nobody can bully you about your clothes, because they will be wearing the same ones. Who knows? With all the extra time you get from not shopping for clothes, maybe you can get your homework done or learn something instead. School uniforms are the bomb.

Having soccer as a school sport in Minnesota

They should not allow soccer as a school sport as they will have to purchase equipment and uniforms which could be used for more useful things such as technology for the school. They also would have to deal with liability costs, and if a child gets injured, they could sue the schools therefore allowing the school to go bankrupt.

    School Uniforms

To properly conclude, the speaker has brought many valuable points to the discussion. However, these methods are not always sound. To begin, the speaker compares to Long Beach, California, even though it has a higher per capita murder rate of 7.4% to 5.1% of NYC (baruch.cuny.edu). Clearly, this should not be possible with lbschools.net, boasting a 90% decrease. Frankly, it seems like inflated numbers, using a small sample space to predict the population, instead of using larger ones. Regarding disciple, "Depression and PTSD are some of the long-term effects when discipline becomes abuse" (CNN.com). To have much of it, regardless of corporal or not, is not useful. Nevertheless, this was a wonderful debate that yielded many valid solutions.
