school's should not make you wear uniforms

Actually, kids might be too upset because they have to wear uniforms to even focus. If you go to the link I posted above, it shows that uniforms have a negative effect on kids' school work and attendance. And like I said before, if someone wants to shoot someone bad enough, they will shoot them at another time and place if they can't do it at school.

As stated previously most work placements have a uniform...

    School Uniforms

As stated previously most work placements have a uniform or workplace attire policy, so unless the majority of students intend on either being self-employed and working from home or being unemployed, which I doubt, then not wearing a uniform at school hardly seems a relevant issue especially if it improves the educational environment. Most adults who wear a uniform or formal work attire seem to cope with wearing it for 8 hours per day 5 days a week without it seriously impairing their personality or self expression, so I'm sure a student can do likewise for the short period of their life while they attend school. As for cost, it is cheaper to have a uniform with the associated positive benefits than it would be to have 5 separate casual outfits with footwear, etc, assuming that the student is going to wear the same 5 outfits for the whole year and in all weather conditions. Wearing casual clothing would bring into play the "haves and have nots" issue where peers look down upon those who either don't have or can't afford the latest fashion items. Peer pressure can lead to bullying, low self esteem, depression with associated problems such as self-harming, drugs, alcohol abuse, theft and possibly suicide. Peer pressure can also find itself transferred onto parents of students, forcing them to take on debts for clothing they can't afford leading them into financial difficulties.

Amendment 1) If schools don't let middle-schoolers wear...

    No school uniforms

Some students want to express themselves in the attire they are wearing. Many middle school students will agree with "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, Or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, Or abridging the freedom of speech, Or of the press, Or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, And to petition the Government for a redress of grievances". (Amendment 1) If schools don't let middle-schoolers wear everyday attire they are taking students the freedom to express themselves away. It is stated in the 1st amendment of The Bill of Rights that freedom of religion, Speech, And the press is against the law. Therefore, Some students would like to express their feelings in what they wear so students would rather wear everyday attire.

Because their parents tell them to; but why? ... Thus,...

Uniforms should be mandatory in all of the public schools of America

Thank you for your response to my debate. You say that children should be able to express themselves. I am forced to agree, but I personally think that there are other ways for children to express their ideas at school. At most middle and high schools there are fine art electives like: arts and crafts, ceramics and painting. That is the perfect place for people to express themselves at school, on paper or on display, with those who might appreciate their ideas and away from people who probably won't. You also say that implementing uniforms is saying that, "Your clothes are more important than your education." They aren't and I agree with you. But when your clothes begin affecting your education, that's when it is time for change. Uniforms will decrease growth of gangs as members will not have an opportunity to display gang colors or items at school. Uniforms will also decrease the pressure to buy the latest fashions as students who have them will not be able to show them off at school. Thus, students won't have as much attention on their clothes; which will lead to more attention on studies. You also say that children couldn't possibly be happy with uniforms. There a number of things that children have to do that they aren't happy with; they have to take baths, they have to do the dishes, they have to study, and they have to go to school. Most children don't like doing those things. Then why do they do them? Because their parents tell them to; but why? Because it's for their own good that they do those things. Taking a bath will make you clean, doing the dishes teaches you the importance of hard work, and studying and going to give you a education. These are all things that might not seem the most fun to do, but will help you. The point is, parents want to help their children become good and successful people, and if uniforms will increase chances of that happening, parents will be willing to make their children wear a uniform. I am afraid that I have to disagree on your statement that "You can still get dress coded in uniform". The rules of a uniform are simple and straightforward. "You will wear this shirt, you will wear these pants, and you will wear these shoes. In the event that you don't do that, please kindly direct yourself towards the school office." Simple, straightforward, no room for loopholes. If you got dress coded for wearing the wrong color shirt, it's your fault. You could have avoided it by simply wearing the right color shirt. There is nobody to blame for your carelessness but yourself. You point out a legitimate statement when you say that some schools make you go to another place for uniforms and they may not have all sizes. But most schools already sell physical education wear to their students themselves. Thus, most schools would also probably be willing to sell their uniforms as well; and since the school is selling their items, they should have an idea of the sizes of their students. So I think that for most schools, people will be able to get a uniforms of their size pretty easily. So accessibility is not an issue. And I conclude my response.

They can't necessarily afford nice clothing. ... Thank...

    Uniforms For Schools

Ok, well your main argument seems to be that uniforms would eliminate kids ability to express themselves. This doesn't require much of a rebuttal. Sure, no uniforms allows kids to express themselves, but that can be negative. You have to think that there are those girls who dress like sluts, and boys who dress like trailer trash. In the case of the girls, that could lead to rape. As for the guys, they're going to get a bad reputation from the start. Also, you must remember the people who are poorer. They can't necessarily afford nice clothing. So, they get made fun of by those who are wearing designer clothes and things like that. Now, I would assert that what you wear can affect your personality to some extent. In my school at least, the girls who like like sluts are sluts. The girls who look smart generally are. The guys who look like trash are, and the ones that look smart are. Now, some of them I know personally. A few years ago, when they wore different clothes, they were good people. Now, those same people have changed their clothes, and become delinquents. Now, if everyone were dressed in uniforms, the general attitude would be different, and test scores and success rates my be higher. This is all for now. If I think of something else, I'll bring it up. Thank you and good luck.

    All schools shouldn't have uniforms

Uniforms waste money, there was only ONE shop which sold uniforms for my school. The ties, I kid you not, cost 10 pounds! That's robbery! Also, due to my First School's strict uniform, there was this kid who was a Sikh, for those who don't know, Sikhism is against having their hair cut. EVER. Because he never cut his hair, his fringe covered his face. The school forced him to have his hair cut! Children should also be allowed to express themselves so it's easier to find friends with similar interests. For example, Timothy wanted to find someone who liked 5SOS, but couldn't because the uniform won't let him wear band shirts! It's even worse in Secondary school because when we are teens our need to express ourselves is through the roof. My school forced a girl to bleach her hair because it went green from THEIR swimming pool!

    i. Freedom of speech. The freedom of speech and expression is given to you at birth from the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights was added so the people can have certain rights and the federal government doesn't have all of the rights. In other words the Bill of Rights was written to control tyranny. By keeping uniforms, the students will have their first amendment, granted to them at birth, infringed. Violating the Constitution is a crime and schools should not do it and get away with it. Schools have been known to violate the religious part too, saying they can't wear certain clothes because of the religious symbol on it. School uniforms will violate this too. http://www.firstamendmentschools.org...

Also, kids can get bullied because of what they wear,...

Kids should wear uniforms in elementary schools.

This is gonna be one heck of a debate: Argument 1: Economic Neutralization Take almost any elementary school across North America (that doe not have uniforms), and look at the clothes that the kids wear. It is usually obvious to tell who is rich and who is less fortunate by just simply looking at there clothing. Certain kids can afford certain clothing, and certain kids can't. So, instead of having a school that blatantly shows what financial situation each kid/kid's family is in, just have every kid in the school wear uniforms, to neutralize the feeling of one kid being "rich" and one kid being "poor". But this is not just an outsider looking in who can notice this happening in schools, it also happens that the kids notice this too. Most kids are able to tell if one of there peers is poor or rich, in a school without uniforms. This leads to my second argument: Argument 2: Bullying When kids can tell that there peers are rich or poor, this can lead to bullying from some kids who seem "rich" to kids who seem "poor" or vice versa. Also, kids can get bullied because of what they wear, besides looking poor or rich, like wearing something that anger another kid. For example: A kid goes to his school wearing a jersey of a sports team that a lot of the kids at that school don't like. Two older kids come up to the kid and beat him senseless because he wore that jersey. A way to stop things like this from happening? Use uniforms, where everyone wears the same thing so: a) kids will not be bullied because of the clothes they wear that reveals a social class, and b) kids will not get bullied because of what they wear, besides looking poor or rich. Argument 3: Rude Clothing If kids at an elementary school got to choose what to wear to school, things could go very wrong. Students could very well wear clothing that either has a rude word, symbol, or could be mistaken to be affiliated with bad things (example: Swastika, which is actually meant to mean "it is good" but is also known to be the Nazi Germany Party's Symbol .) Students might also be wearing clothing that reveals too much of the persons body, which can lead to things that are not needed to say in this debate. Now, before you say "dress codes" I would like to remind you that dress codes are rare in schools and are usually not very effective, because most teachers don't know about them. So, what is the solution to stop kids from wearing rude clothing? UNIFORMS! Argument 4: Time I will split this argument into two parts. Part 1: You save time actually getting clothes for school before the school year begins. Most schools with uniforms either provide the students with them for little or no cost OR you buy them from a store. Instead of going through all the racks looking for clothes for school, you can just pick up or pick out the clothes you need. Part 2: You save time in the morning because you have your clothes "picked" out for you. Instead of finding something that would fit the "fad" or the season, you can just put on the uniform you wear every year. Argument 5: School Colours School's often have school colours that a represented in sports team's jerseys, on logo's, and more. What better way to support your school or at least give the message to other kids that you are part of a certain school than wearing these colours! Often times schools with uniforms have chosen the colours of the uniform to be the "colours of the school." It is hard to get everyone, in a school without uniforms, to wear the same colours. But, with a school uniform, you can make sure everyone is wearing your school's colours! References: https://ca.answers.yahoo.com... http://en.wikipedia.org... That public schools should enforce uniforms

I will defend my case and then attack. Cont. 1 In my school there are rich kids and poor kids. My opponent doesnt understand the fact that casual wear is discriminating no matter what. Even if one kid is offended. Taco Bell is not known for their uniforms. Uniforms don't carry power. The nazi's were not known for their uniforms. They were known for killing millions of people. My opponent neglects the power of casual wear. We all have stereotypes for clothing. This affects the person wearing them like or not. Personally, I have been made fun of because of my clothes. When we neglect uniforms we neglect equality. People have killed themselves because of people making fun of their clothes. Its not their fault if they can't afford it. Why should we put kids through hell in order to have some freedom. I agree with freedom. But freedom has the purpose fufill happiness. Since, this is'nt happening, I can only see a vote for pro.

I will counter this with an opinion of my own. ... [1]...

Private Schools Should Have Their Students Wear Uniforms

I will proceed to refute pro’s arguments. #1 Uniforms will not boost a student’s self-esteem. Insecurities among adolescents are caused by puberty. Every teen will go through it. It is hormones that cause self-consciousness, not clothes. Teens will always want to identify themselves, be it through clothing or other things. [1] I would also quickly like to point out that the source pro uses to back up his statistics is an online-shopping website for school uniforms. This is a biased source and therefore not legitimate evidence. #2 Pro doesn’t seem to have a source backing this claim up so I will assume it’s a personal opinion. I will counter this with an opinion of my own. I’m a high school student and I have never been so distracted by other people’s clothing that it interferes with my schoolwork. Frankly, I can’t say what’s so distracting by a sweater or a pair of jeans. And I highly doubt other teenagers are so distracted that a uniform system should be introduced. #3 Again pro, websites selling school uniforms are NOT valid sources. I will comment on the bullying in a short while. #4 I would like pro to give me some examples of bad scenarios that happened because the offender was not identified by anybody of the school security. Cliques and gangs will always exist among teenagers because hormones cause them to rebel against the status-quo. #5 According to Psychology Today bullies are often the result of bad parenting. They do not pick their targets based on what they wear, but whether if they can dominate and humiliate them. Sub-assertive classmates are often an easy target, for they will not fight back. An assertive person can wear the cheapest clothes and still fend off a potential bully. [2] #6 Pro says that students find different ways to express themselves because they lose the freedom to pick their own clothes. This contradicts arguments #1, #3 and #4. On the one hand he claims that cliques and gangs will be avoided and students will have a feeling of togetherness. How will this happen if students are going to express themselves through other things? As I already established teenagers will form their own identity and will derogate others for it. #7 The sources did not explain in which manner the uniforms prevented behavioral problems and reduced vandalism. Meanwhile, I have found a detailed report of a similar experiment in Michigan. Here, the data suggested no correlation between uniforms and academic improvements and reduced behavioral problems. [3] As we can see, there is no conclusive evidence suggesting anything pro claimed. Only circumstantial evidence. [1] http://en.wikipedia.org... [2] http://www.psychologytoday.com... -Opponent drops my distraction argument. Self-expression: My opponent has found a clever counter-plan to my problem. Good job. Yet students are still only limited to certain colors. Tsk-tsk! Changing the policy: Inexpensive?? They cost hundreds of dollars as I mentioned before. "Uniforms will not solve the problem of looking fat." Exactly! My opponent concedes that school uniforms aren't needed all the time. Agree/strongly agree. Why should we trust these parents and teachers? Why not add the students in as well? Even though parents know their children, they cannot speak for them. Neither can the teachers. Why are the statistics trustworthy? My opponent hasn't shown why this source doesn't commit the texas-sharpshooter fallacy. It doesn't show all 3 sides of the picture; we cannot know absolutely for sure these benefits and lack of harm are actually there. My opponent fails to rebut my doubt put into the benefits of (the other) school uniform statistic website.

One is a school website for a COLLEGE. Which when kids join, there is usually NO uniforms at all. The other is a clothes website. Do these prove ANYTHING to you? SO WHAT if a kid goes to school dressing like the family can't afford that good of clothing! Teach kids to STFU about it and accept it. Don't make it WORSE by telling this poor, tight budgeted family that they must make their budget TIGHTER because of uniforms! As for identification, nametags! Hats! Special shirts for the occasion! Bracelets! It isn't hard to come up with other ways. GET RID of the pressure to wear stylish clothing. Teach kids it's not worth it! It's all overrated BS. Eliminate the SOURCE of the problem! The source isn't what people wear, but rather peoples' attitudes. As for kids that arrange clothes before they sleep, now, like they will in college, they have a CHOICE of what to wear. And they can choose. If they are taught not to care or be picky about their clothing, then NO, it won't take that long.

Students have the right to express themselves My oponent...

Students should be required to wear school uniform.

Thanks for a detailed reply! First I will be refuting my opponents 3 arguments (no, I don't agree with them), then I will be going back to strengthen my own. My opponents 1st argument was about how uniforms create an orderly enviornment. They also talk about an honor and pride to wear such uniforms This is completely wrong in this case. These uniform are not letting students to express themselves. My opponents show nothing in their case that expression is going to create a distruptive enviornment. Students have the right to express themselves My oponent also talks about first impression causes a popularity system in their 2nd argument However, There are other ways to see someone for the first time, not neccessarily their clothing. They can see people based on their hairstyle, and other characteristics. Their third argument is that the uniforms generate money to the government. However, Judge, you must see that this is completely non unique This can also be turned to my side of the debate. People without uniforms buy regular clothes and if they buy regular clothes ( my opponent says that there is a LOT more regular clothes than uniforms in the 2nd round) then shouldn't there be more tax being generated WITHOUT uniforms? Now I will strengthen my arguments My first argument is that it violates freedom of expression My opponent states that there is a hierarchy in the school However, my opponentes show no link to why this is harmful. If there is a hierarchy, (I am not agreeing to this) then the students who are low in the hierarchy can still learn. They are still getting an education, not harming anyone at all! My refutation against hierarchy earlier can be crossapplied. I stated that There are other ways to see someone for the first time, not neccessarily their clothing. They can see people based on their hairstyle, and other characteristics. My second argument was that uniforms are expensive and they cost $249 My opponent says that people buy way too many clothes, more than $249 First of all, many girls aren't that rich. There are many others that do not have more than $249 to spare. This leads me to their second refutation, which was that you only need to buy this once. I agree, you only need to buy this once...until you outgrow it. In almost one year, you have to buy another set, for another $249. If you wear uniforms since kindergarten to 12th grade, then $3,237 will be spend on uniforms alone for a whole student going to school. What if the family has more than one kid? If they have 2, it will be double, and if they have 3, the price would be tripled and so on and so forth. My opponent also talked about how this sustains the economy. Again, I will like to appy my previous refutation which is that One must see that this is completely non unique This can also be turned to my side of the debate. People without uniforms buy regular clothes and if they buy regular clothes ( my opponent says that there is a LOT more regular clothes than uniforms in the 2nd round) then shouldn't there be more tax being generated WITHOUT uniforms? They also talked about how schools can pay for us. However, this is wrong because school do not have that much money at hand My 3rd argument is that this cause bullying They state that students don't wear their uniforms outside of school. This is completely wrong! What do they wear once school ends? Do they go naked? (joke intended) People do walk to and from school. Obviously, they will meet rival members of another school, and since Students at my school hate students at a nearby school, some people would go into fistifights Since none of my opponents arguments stand, the CON/NEG should win Thank You

    School Uniforms are not needed

In order to start this debt, i believe it goes against the first amendment right of free speech that schools to a make a rule that restricts a person of being a symbol of who they are. I believe with all these school shootings that are happing that it turns out with a good idea but a person will conflict harm whether they "dress like a student in the uniform." Also for parents to pay more money, than that isn't making the life style any easier. If you have to buy certain types of items than those are items to upkeep and buy more of if an issue were to happen. As well as bullies will always find something to make a child's life horrible wether its how their face looks or if they like a certain thing. Bullies will always bully wether or not the dress code is enforced. As well as it could decrease the comfort level of how the student like wearing it because it's not comfortable or its stupid and it will keep being distracted. As well school isn't a prison even though there are similarities, such as what time you eat or were you are supposed to go at certain times, so enforcing kids to wear something they don't want that also makes them feel trapped such as a jail. I talked to a principle about his dress code and he supported it but also mentioned that it does effect the child's experince because of clubs that were school supported so the school dress code was still enforced at the clubs. (chess, math or science fairs) Also this is a good example of the tinker case.

    Kids should wear uniforms

Kids should not wear school uniforms. It teaches them from a young age that everyone should act the same, and dress the same. Children should be able to wear what they chose because it lets them determine who they are and what they are trying to become. We shouldn't decide that for them. It also takes away from their childhood. Let them be unaffected by the harsh reality that we always have someone telling us what do or what to wear. There will come a time when they are adults and will have jobs that will come with dress requirements, but right now let them be children. Let them explore and dress how they want.

    Should schools require uniforms

My final argument is that uniforms are often uncomfortable. Uniforms are often not available in plus sizes which can be hard for kids that wear a larger size. Also uniforms can often be stiff or scratchy. You definitely do not want kids to be messing with their uncomfortable clothes all day instead of focusing. This may be short but my final argument is that uniforms are sometimes made with a see through fabric, which can cause girls undergarments to show through, which can cause the girls to be made fun of. Thank you so much for accepting my debate challenge and in conclusion that is why students should not wear uniforms.
