    School Uniforms

" freedom of expression is important" Yes it is important, however there are plenty of ways this can be achieved while still wearing a uniform. It also prevents bullying or getting distracted by what everyone is wearing. What if someone causes offense to another person through the way they dress? "A mandatory dress code encourages conformity. Is that the message we want to send our children? That individuality is dangerous?" Its not conformity that is being encouraged it is that in school it doesn't matter if you cant afford top shop or shop at Asda or even get clothes in car boot sales its about learning and being part of a community not just social classes. "But think of the major implications behind a uniform. Children are already made to think alike. Now we're making them dress alike?"- Children are not made to think alike they are encouraged to be imaginative. "Students must NOT follow the crowd. They MUST think, act, and dress for themselves."- Students are not following the crowd if they are being made to wear the same if anything it stops them people would see a t-shirt a girl is wearing and want to have it so everyone copies each other. First of all, Uniforms are worn at schools so there won't...

school's should not make you wear uniforms

First, let me start off by explaining myself( although it is mostly self explanatory): school: an institution where instruction is given to persons under college age. uniforms: an outfit or style worn by members of a group, or in this case, students in a school. First of all, Uniforms are worn at schools so there won't be any gang colors being worn, and also so no one can make fun of you if you wear clothes from Wal-Mart, or a place that isn't "popular" like Hollister, or Aeropostale. But if someone is going to make fun of you because your not rich, they can still make fun of you. Uniforms don't hide how much money you have. And if someone is going to make fun of your clothes, and you have a uniform on, they will find something else to make fun of you for. And gangs can't be stopped just because they have to wear a uniform to school. They can "throw up" gang signs and stuff like that while they are at school, uniforms or not. It is also not fair to the people who followed the dress code before the school got uniforms. If they had always worn what they were supposed to they shouldn't have to wear a uniform just because alot of other kids at their school didn't follow the dress code. They will feel like if they follow the rules, they still might get punished. It will also make the kids, and some parents angry at the school. The school will get alot of calls from angry parents, and some of the kids might rebel, and stop doing their schoolwork.

(GY) School uniform should be abolished

I Agree with the research my opponent has posted, I wish him good luck. First, I would like to ask my opponent if he is talking about private or public schools. Second, yes research has proved better behavior in children, but school uniforms have taken a person(s) freedom of expression. Usually people express themselves through the cloths they wear at school, at a public and private schools that don't have mandated school uniforms, The First Amendment protects one's freedom of religion, and speech. press.http://topics.law.cornell.edu... . School uniforms can come into conflict of one's religion. For example, Muslims cannot wear a hijab. Definition of a Hijab: a headscarf worn by Muslim women; conceals the hair and neck and usually has a face veil that covers the face. As much as uniforms do promote school spirit and less bullying as my opponent says, students find ways to be "Rebellious" (to go against) and try to find a way to be different from everyone else like wearing jewellery or take off a extra set of clothing. You wont wear uniforms outside of school in public places, There are dress codes for jobs and some fancy restaurants, but not uniforms. A story that I saw on the news, a little girl( and a few others but the news focused on mainly the girl) got suspended from grade school(elementary school grades K-5 in some schools) because she had a pink stripe across her shoe that went against the school policy of the uniform and dress code. The family is poor and cannot afford another pair of shoes. Also uniforms are expensive, you have to get multiple uniforms and have to get it custom fit, if you grow out of it then you have to get it re sized and buy a new pair. Uniforms are just another way to get more money. The bullying problem is not solved by uniforms, it may slow it down but it is not a solution. A bully is not going to stop just because they are wearing the same thing. They are going to use attacks that don't have to deal with saying "nice shirt " or "those pants look stupid" but they can use personal attacks so therefore it is no solution. And schools that have uniforms are at no lower risk of a school shooting or violence than a school with no uniforms, a intruder can get a janitor cloths or get a uniform, or even a student can easily be able to sneak a firearm in. Also the behavior problem as my opponent states, that behavior has been better since uniforms were in place by the school. Behavior can be caused by many things, deprived of sleep (not enough sleep), no breakfast, and what time the school starts.

Is this a decrease in freedom? ... The fact is that...

That public schools should enforce uniforms

I would to thank my opponent for this debate. I will attack his case and then go on to my own. Cont. 1 Uniforms will affect the education of the poor. In fact, uniforms are equalizing the economic status in the school. If one kid is rich and has a nice shirt, this could be harmful to a kid who is poor and has a worse shirt. The fact is that no uniforms are putting schools in social classes. Cont. 2 Uniforms restrics and decreases freedom. Lawyers, waiters, chefs, cashiers have uniforms. Is this a decrease in freedom? Is anything a decrease in freedom? Is a ice cream parlor not having the king of ice cream you like a decrease in freedom. In the world around us there is always a decrease in freedom in everything. Cont. 3 Uniforms go agaisnt the idea of diversity. Is choosing the outfit that employees wear at Taco Bell racist? First of all, the KKK did not decide kid's uniforms. Choosing a outfit is not power. Its an easy decision. Usually the uniforms have many options. Cont. 4 Uniforms do not solve our current problems. Uniforms are strictly enforced. Everyone has the same type of clothing. Now on to my case Cont. 1 Uniforms solve for diversity. In the 1960's we went from hugging our classmates to shooting our classmates. That was the same time we went from uniforms to casual attire. The fact is that clothes are distinctive and they can cause racial and economical stereotypes.

I also didn't dress like that in school, but all it takes is one person to dress inappropriately to have the administration enforce a strict dress code. I don't have a problem with piercings for the most part, just as long as they are tasteful. It is just inappropriate for girls to show as much chest and butt as they do. Not to mention I don't want to see all these boxers and stuff... they make belts to solve that problem.

I am not going to use bullying as one of my points because it doesn't stop bullying. However, if they kept school uniforms, then students would not have the chance to dress inappropriately. If they did, then they would get punished instead of having a chance to do it again. These are my main points, and I stand by them. Thank you.

I think school uniform shouldn't be worn as it is a waste of money and is too strict in style. It takes ages to iron and because we all have "normal" clothes anyway, there is no point in getting new clothes. School uniform doesn't suit everyone and you cant show off your style. Uniforms attract bullies because of the way you wear them. Also, any stranger will be able to see what school you go to and it might be a way of them tracking who you are. And no one likes them. so do you want to be uncomfortable in a stuffy school or have fun showing YOUR personality and being yourself. check: listland.com/top-10-reasons-school-uniforms-should-be-banned http://learningin21.edublogs.org...

Part 2: No, you might not end up saving time in the...

Kids should wear uniforms in elementary schools.

Lets end this! "Economic Neutralization" I realize that kids are bullied because of their economic status however by equalizing everyone by giving them the same clothing will give kids the wrong perspective of the world. Out in this great big world we have economic classes and it is of utmost importance that kids learn about these classes. Making everyone equal hides the truth from kids thus unpreparing them for the future. We cannot leave kids unprepared for the future that they will soon be living in. "Bullying" In elementary schools there are lots of adults that can help out with and stop bullying. Plus younger kids will be less likely to bully other kids especially over clothing. Parents who buy the clothing usually take the subject of this piece of clothing and how it could affect their child/children so that decreases the chances of bullying over clothe even less. Besides, most kids just don't care and we are talking about little kids so the amount of bullying is less then what it would be with older kids. "Rude Clothing" Again, when parents buy clothing for their kids they take these kind of things into consideration! They don't just but any piece of clothing without locking at it! I also found some flaws in your examples. 1. These days clothing especially for young kids with swastikas are very rare if not nonexistent. people don't make that kind of clothing because they know what that symbol transformed into. 2. I think you forgot a very important part of this debate. We are writing about elementary students. While I have seen this type of clothing before, it would take a parent who is really sick and twisted in the head. Anyways, let's continue. "Time" Part 1: OK, you might save time getting clothing with uniforms, however, the cost is far greater. Like I proved in my first argument the amount of money that uniforms cost just may not be worth the conserved time! Part 2: No, you might not end up saving time in the morning, especially if you are poor, because you have so many other things to worry about you might not have time to put on your uniform or you might lose concentration and forget. Plus if you had a uniform and you wore i every day it would have to get washed often, and sometimes the uniform might not have been cleaned in time! "School Colors" Is it a must to wear the school colors? You could always send home a notice asking parents to have there kid/s wear the school colors. Also, do school colors help out education? No! Yes, you do need clothing on whether or not it is school clothing but by instituting school uniforms you are making a big fuss over something fairly irrelevant. "The term "Uniforms" does not necessarily mean that the clothing has to be fancy or expensive" Then you should have defined this in the beginning! It is also still a uniform and it will cost within the 100-250 dollar range! School uniforms are expensive whether or not they are that fancy jacket and tie or a t-shirt with jeans! If you wanted to debate a certain type of uniform, then you should have defined that in the first round. "Since when where all conversations all good?" I have already covered bullying, but I guess I need to do it again! Most kids don't care and parents will most likely buy something that they know that would cause their child to get harassed and bullied! There is also a teacher who HAS EARS and can hear what the children are saying to one and another! "Uniform putting-on comes naturally to kids" Yes, putting on a uniform may come naturally but there are other factors to consider! What if a child has to help with younger siblings, or has to walk to the bus stop that is a good distance away from home, what if a child over sleeps, and what if he or she is from a poor family and has to wake up when his/her parents leave for work? Using school uniforms is inconsiderate to the poor and unfortunate! "And that is just a harsh punishment-making school! That has not much to do with not wearing a uniform" Yes it does, that school has harsh punishments FOR school uniforms so the punishments DO have to do with the debate. But I need to ask the voters, is it even worth punishing something as little as wearing a piece of clothing even if it does not have anything offensive? I think not. The whole message I was trying to convey was that even requiring a student get away from their education EVEN if it is only for a few minutes will hurt our children's education and possibly future. Should person be homeless because he wore the wrong piece of clothing? Nope! "So why focus on what you are going to wear" Isn't that what this debate is about? In fact I would ask the same thing to people who are pro school-uniforms! i think kids can wear whatever as long as it is not offensive (i.e a swastika) But people who support uniforms only think "Wear this and ONLY this!" That is focusing on what people wear. Thanks for challenging me to this great debate! http://voices.yahoo.com... http://www.statisticbrain.com...

Thank you for initiating this debate. I believe children should be able to express themselves. School concepts are already similar to those of a prison, adding the mandatory dress code is basically saying, "Your clothes are more important than your education." It isn't! Cool, you want you them prepared for job environments, but parents are always telling their children to not grow up too fast, so why are we forcing them into something that they possibly won't be happy with? I know from personal experience that dress codes are really strict, even without uniforms. Plus, you can still get dress coded in uniform, all because you didn't wear the right color shirt, once again from experience, that's even worse than getting dress coded because you're wearing a tank top. Some schools also make you go to a specific location to buy your uniforms, also from experience, and they don't always sell school uniforms for people of all sizes, my sister was proof of that. It made her even more aware of her size, which made her somewhat depressed and resulted in her putting on more weight. These are all reasons why I disprove of I know from personal experience that dress codes are really strict, even without uniforms. Uniforms should be banned from schools

I stand against this argument, school's should keep the uniform policy. Uniforms give someone an idea of which school the student is from. It also keeps you safe in some ways and gives a sense of belonging to the student. It may also symbolise the age or grade level of the student. For example, let's take the school UWCSEA. For the infant grade they have light blue shirts, middle school green shirts, Junior high school, blue shirts, and senior high school, white shirts. That way we know which grade and that might be helpful to other students and teachers.

Cont 2) The only argument against my second contention is...

That public schools should enforce uniforms

Ok I will defend my case then attack. (Cont 1) The argument my opponent states against my first contention is irrelevant. Sure, we would look the same, but my contention one is that people who cant afford these uniforms would not be able to get any (maybe a little) education. My opponent states that uniforms the economic status, that is in no way true. Uniforms affect your education and how you look while you receive it. In the case of the rich kid and poor kid, It goes beyond clothing. The rich kids would undoubtedly be in private schools instead of public. Our problems of discrimination always exists. The rich goes to private schools, colleges, ect. Uniforms would not make us economically equal. (Cont 2) The only argument against my second contention is that workers, lawyers, chefs and other jobs require uniforms. I concede to the point that yes those jobs with the uniform rules are a decrease in freedom. However, we all have the choice to work at those jobs or not. We accept the job knowingly that we will have to wear uniforms. Whereas, in school we are required to attend whether or not we wear uniforms or not. We have the choice or not whether or not to buy the ice cream (that my opponent stated) knowing that some freedom will be lost. (Cont 3)Okay, to address the racist issue, the definition of being racist is saying that your race is superior or that another race is inferior. Never did I say that the kkk decided the kids uniforms, but that they did not want diversity. My opponent never really addresses the diversity issue but states that "Usually the uniforms have many options". When some one decides your choices for ex. you have the choice between red, black, and green but only those 3; that is not diversity nor is it much freedom.(Linking to my cont 2) To address the argument stating that uniforms do not represent power. That is not true. Look at the Nazis, they wear their uniforms to represent Hitler and promote his power. Uniforms are symbols representing the power they were chosen by. (Cont 4) Ok first off my opponent contradicts himself when he states that everyone has the same type of clothing but on his attack on my Contention 3 he's stating that uniforms have many options. He states that the uniforms are strictly enforced. AGAIN, it doesn't solve our problems and by STRICTLY enforcing uniforms there will undoubtedly be some type of resistance causing other problems. Now on to my opponent's case (Cont 1) I would like to point out the logical fallacy in his contention one. There is no way you can link shootings to uniforms. And the negative has already pointed out that uniforms would not solve for diversity due to the facts the rich would still go to private schools and that itself is already a form of stereotype. My opponent states that our current clothes cause racial stereotypes. But take into fact that to others it might be a racial stereotypes, I call it a culture and tradition. (P.S) I urge a neg vote.

It is still being "encouraged", discrimination and partiality has not yet been eradicated and if all students can not be made equal economically at least they can be deemed as an equal by common clothing. All students are not equally capable which makes teachers partial, there is no need to enhance this partiality by allowing students to wear clothing of choice. I have first hand experience of how the under privileged children are treated by teachers in schools. 3) Burden of Proof missing 4) A school uniform is of sentimental value to alumnis of the particular school.
