Public school students should wear uniforms

Yes, I agree with your previous statement. When we become older, we all have to wear uniforms. Life is like that. But wouldn't it be better if the habit is ingrained into their mind from an early age? If we are shown how to wear a uniform, then we become better at wearing it, and you know that to get something correct, it takes time. Well, the time to start practicing is when we start school. That way, we become responsible adults who wear uniform tidier than the ones who don't. "A wise person does at once, what a fool does at last. However, now I am older, I am determined that the younger generation should suffer as I did! Thank you!

And my argument does not contain Red Herring because...

Whether students should wear uniforms Part 2

School uniforms are not necessarily expensive, most schools allow students to purchase uniforms from outside the school, meaning you can always find discounts while back to school shopping. And I agree other efforts can be made to make students feel united, like joining a club or a team. But the reality is the whole student body can't participate in one single club or one team, the best way to include the entire student body in a unifying manner is to appoint students to professional school attire, which they will be using in their future careers as well. And uniforms are not stripping of them of their individuality instead it will be used to even the starting points in all students' character, and allow them to be judged on their actions in the school as in joining clubs or participating in school events, instead of how many name brand clothes you have or whether or not you are under the poverty line. Which in turn is preparing them for their future careers, because in reality you will be hired on how many internships or volunteer work you've done, your actions not how good you look in a suit. And my argument does not contain Red Herring because everything I said is relevant to school uniforms, its just one of the reasons school uniforms are promoted and bullying is a big reason, the topic of safety is commonly brought up and what it does is make gang identification is obscured. Group violence and theft are dissipated... Children are no longer identified by their 'colors.' Uniform dress alleviated the feelings of imminent danger for students who were afraid they might inadvertently dress in gang colors. As well as prevent bullying as I've stated before. Your argument on the other hand presents itself with the straw man fallacy because you misrepresented my conclusion by saying it strips individuality and then attacked it with the oncoming premises. Conclusion: School uniforms are inexpensive, safe, and should be required by schools.

    Schools should have uniforms

Yes, people can't express themselves as easily, but uniforms prevent the automatic judging based on someones clothes and allow people to communicate, then judge a person. Students should also feel safe in school and not threatened by other students that have the newest or more fancy clothing. What about people that can't afford nice clothing. Uniforms would solve all of these problems and are well worth the money. https://ggwash.org...

Cost" My opponent states that uniforms cost a lot, but...

Kids should wear uniforms in elementary schools.

Sorry this took me such a long time. "Cost" My opponent states that uniforms cost a lot, but take into account this: The term ""Cost" My opponent states that uniforms cost a lot, but take into account this: The term "Uniforms" does not necessarily mean that the clothing has to be fancy or expensive. In fact, uniforms can be identical jeans and a T-shirt, yet still be a "uniform" and be cheap. Also, most schools would provide funding if the kid/parent explains to them that they can not afford a uniform. "Creative Freedom" My opponent states that: "Imagine the conversations, like "Who is that on your shirt?" And what if another kid also likes the the character on another kid's shirt? Lost friends and conversations just because of clothing restrictions." Hold on a sec. Since when where all conversations all good? Preventing conversations might be good thing, if some kids get verbally bullied because of that "character on another kids shirt." "Concentration" My opponent states that you might not remember to put on your uniform in your daily routine. Uniform putting-on comes naturally to kids. Also, a point about "concentration.": Uniforms HELPS concentration for kids because kids won't get distracted from work by looking at someone with something distinct on a shirt. "The Punishments" My opponent gives an example on how Jim Thorpe Elementary School has harsh punishments for not wearing uniforms to school. Who says that all (uniform) schools are like that? And that is just a harsh punishment-making school! That has not much to do with not wearing a uniform but more the toughness of the school. I went to a elementary school in NYC and when kid did not wear a uniform, it was okay. They just got a warning! "Schools don't need uniforms!" My opponent states that: "Again, what is the purpose of schools? To educate!" EXACTLY! So why focus on what you are going to wear, what the other kids are going to wear, the new fashion trends and such, when the "purpose of school is to educate"! If you have uniforms, then these distractions will have a much greater chance of going away!

I have grown up in a strictly uniformed system of...

    School Uniforms

I have grown up in a strictly uniformed system of schooling. I hate it, with a passion, and would like to state why. But before I begin my debate I want to counter a potential point often raised by pro on the matter. Pro school uniform advocates often argue that it reduces inequality because the rich and poor wear the same clothing, thus reducing, if not obliterating, bullying over economic status in society. However, to force a minimum wage family to buy a fairly expensive school uniform (as most are made of top-notch material, especially in sports kit) is for more cruel than allowing the child to buy attractive clothing of a less-well-known-branded clothing. For example, they would be allowed to wear a hand-me-down t-shirt which probably is still in tact and ready to use. In winter they would wear a knitted jumper as opposed to the expensive factory-produced school jumper which their minimum wage family have to give up food to afford. If you want to begin discussing economic inequality, first consider which system (uniform of non-uniform) allows poor families and children the best opportunities. Besides, there are some attractive cheap clothing simply cheap because the brand is not well known, the child could happily wear this. I shall now state the three contentions which I shall stand by in my opposition to school uniform. Firstly, a child is a being hampered creatively. Each child is an individual who should be able to wear shat they like to express themselves. Secondly, uniform teaches people to expect all to be the same and reject weirdness, a very bad attitude in life. Thirdly, uniform is forcing people to buy from one source often creating a monopoly. This means they can price the uniform as they wish and you will have to buy it. This is economically a poor method of going about business.

Apparently my opponent didn't get the fact that I was...

    Puclic Schools Should Require Uniforms

Rebuttels & Defense My opponent has defended her case on helping schools well however, she has failed to state why it should be uniforms in particular that do this. Even if this was to rake in a few extra funds (which it wont and i'll get to that in a few), it still would not be able to bring enough to help the school that much. There are other ways that can be utilized to bring in money to help the schools that are in need. Whether they be car washes, fund raisers, bake sells, etc. There are a massive number of methods that can bring a lot of extra funds to help the school that can increase student creativity and responsability without taking away from the students liberty. It really wouldn't help parents at all. They would have to pay an increase in taxes every year. Kids and Teens will keep growing till long after they are out of school so they will have to keep getting new ones every single year. Normal clothes from Walmart cost up too 5 to 15 dollars each it is way better then the average uniform that costs between 250 and 270 dollars per uniform [1]. As one can see it would financtially devistate the poorer families. Thus proving uniforms are uneeded in this area and would do more harm then good. I'm sure uniforms would be provided in all shapes to accommodate every kind of student. Apparently my opponent didn't get the fact that I was stating a figure of speach when I said this. I was meaning that uniforms might suit the need of a few students but they would over all hurt the others. My opponent says that uniforms could save lives. Even if this is true (which it isn't) there are better ways of handling this as opposed to uniforms. These methods could be education in why bullying is bad (which is already done), punishing bullies, etc. One does not have to hurt the rest of the kids that didn't bully just because a few punks was being mean. Uniforms don't even cure bully problems in school. No matter what you dress students in, they will always find a way to pass judgment upon their peers. The clothes are not the root cause of bullying and therefore the bullying will continue, regardless of dress policy. No matter what clothing rules apply, students will always find ways to pass judgment upon each other. In this country especially, majority rules. It's simply the type of voting system in place. 80% vs 20% is an overwhelming majority rule. It doesn't matter how many parents want it or not. Parents give up all rights to their children from the moment they drop them off at the public school. This veiw is supported by a number of federal judges and statesmen. The biggest condoner would be Federal Judge Melinda Harmon who ruled it in a number of court cases[2]. So it really doesn't matter at all if 80% of the parents support it or not. Children can find other ways to express themselves besides their clothing, such as hair, activities, jewlery, music, etc. Their identities aren't being stripped. Even if there are other ways for kids and teens to express themselves this doesn't take away from the fact that the students would be having the right to express themselves by clothing taken away without probable cause. Therefore, manditory school uniforms in public schools are unconstitutional. Conclusion In conclusion, Manitory uniforms in public schools are unconstitutional therefore, it would be illegal for them to that since it would violate their freedom to of expression. They cost too much to help the parents. It doesn't matter what the parents think, because they give up their parental rights as soon as they drop the students off at the public school, and on top of all that uniforms don't even solve bullying and would make the majority of the students mad and as from what the articles I posted tells they could rise in protest and would hurt the over all purpose of schools which is to teach students. Therefore, uniforms are a very bad idea. [1]http://wiki.answers.com... [2]http://news.google.com...

C: It is a good idea to start enforcing uniforms. ... The...

    School Uniform Should Be Banned

Hi, thanks to Kim_winter for starting this debate, looking forward to it. In this round I'm going to make a constructive case (I assume that most people understand what the words 'school uniforms should be banned' mean), without doing any rebuttals. ----- Contention One: Deterrence of Crime. In Long Beach, California, the school board there initiated a district-wide rule that made sure that all students, from Kindergarten to Eighth grade, wore uniforms to school everyday, and the results after just two years is remarkable: assault and battery went down by 34%, assault with a deadly weapon down by 50%, sex offenses down by 74% (!), robbery went down 65%, and possession of drugs went down by 69% [1]. A 2007 peer-reviewed study illustrated the fact that when schools that have been historically known for higher incidences of sexual assault bring in school uniforms, sexual attacks are less likely to happen [2]. Because of these facts, let me give you some premises: P1: It is a good idea to reduce violence in schools. P2: Enforcing uniforms reduces violence in schools. C: It is a good idea to start enforcing uniforms. Contention Two: Increased Productivity.A letter published by the NASSP, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, said that, "When all students are wearing the same outfit, they are less concerned about how they look and how they fit in with their peers; thus, they can concentrate on their schoolwork" [3]. In 2010, the University of Houston conducted a study that showed that when elementary schools implemented school uniforms, the average test score for a girl went up by 3% [4]. Before I go on, I just want you to think about that statistic, and the implications of it. 3% less people failed the 3rd grade, all thanks to wearing something that was provided by a school, at little or no cost. Now, you may not think that is important, but boy, you'd be wrong. Let me give you some premises: P1: We ought to increase test scores of our children by any means. P2: Enforcement of school uniforms directly links to increased test scores. C: We ought to enforce school uniforms. Contention Three: Reduced peer pressure and bullying. (I know that this point is in direct conflict with my opponent's main points, but I'm not going to refute them or anything, just provide reasons why it actually does reduce these things). In 2013, the National Association of Elemtary School Principals, NAESP, over 85% of school leaders said that uniforms promote "a significant, positive impact on peer pressure," and over 60% said that they reduce bullying [5]. Let's just think about that for a second... that could be up to 60% less people that commit suicide... 60% less mass murders due to bullying... 60% more productivity. Virginia B. Draa, Assistant Professor of Human Ecology at Youngstown State University, said uniforms can decrease peer pressure and blur class lines between students [6]. Here are some premises: P1: We ought to decrease bullying. P2: Enforcement of school uniforms decreases bullying. C: We ought to enforce school uniforms. ----- Sources: [1]: M. Nobody is learning what the proper way to dress is if they are being told what to wear. What good will that do? Plus, a dress code would insure that no one is dressing inappropriately. Dress codes that are enforced will teach students how to present themselves in a way that is respectable and modest.

It is impossible to prevent all outside intrusion Children will still ask for designer labels for outside of school clothing. (Uniforms will not make this issue go away.)
