This Party Would Ban School Uniforms

    1) Uniforms act as an equaliser, and help conceal problematic divides such as class differences. 2) They therefore are also better for families which have less money, as students do not feel pressured to buy expensive designer clothing. 3) Non-uniform clothes can contain offensive or derogatory language. Uniforms remove this problem. 4) Students who wear uniforms are, on average, better behaved, and perform well academically when compared to their non-uniform counterparts. 5) Students wearing a uniform are identifiable as school students. This makes them less likely to truant, as they would be at greater risk of being caught. Onto some brief refutation: Yes, some students do indeed struggle to express themselves through music, art, poetry, and various other methods. This single point does not outweigh the above points, which are much more solid reasons to keep school uniforms. It is also worth noting that school is not necessarily an appropriate time to express oneself through fashion- this can be a considerable distraction from students' academic pursuits, and students can easily express themselves through fashion outside of school.

School Uniforms are a good Idea

I support the idea of school uniforms. There are strong reasons for that. I wore school uniform from 7 to 15 years old and I'd never felt that it reflects on my personality or stops me from expressing myself. I knew that it was just a rule and I was never agains the discipline. Discipline lead to good results. So students were more concentrated on their studies than on their clothes and also they shouldn't spent at least 30-40 minutes in front of wardrobe choosing the best outfit for that day. In schools where uniforms are required there is decreasing of fights, violence among students, sexual offencies and what is important there is less comparision between people from different social levels. So students from families where cannot efford expensive and fancy clothes are more likely to feel equal to those from richer families.

It may help to not wear a spacific outfit to block out...

    Students should wear school uniforms.

You need to cite your evidence because I feel as if you are making these statistics up - please provide links and citations. What someone wears will not change if they are going to kill themselves or not - that is an obsurd reasoning. It may help to not wear a spacific outfit to block out the bullies - but bullying is a more complex issue, as I stated before, then just someone's wardrobe. And bullying does not really have to do with uniforms at all - if a student is being bullied because of their clothing in a public school, then they can just move to a private school with uniforms as a requirement. More uniforms = more money needed to buy them? Where is the board of education going to find the money to pay for these uniforms? Who will manufacture and make them? There are much more problems associated with your claim then you think.

P "....Clothes can often be used to define social...

School Uniforms Should not be Required

Wow! This "noob" is good! She might even be the first to beat me in this topic! Now, for my rebuttal.... "...hours of decisions of what to wear." That is a total exaggeration. No one takes hours to decide what to wear. And if they do, their parents will teach them to be faster, training their children for later jobs that do not require a uniform. School uniforms remove the training needed. If a person wears school uniforms all the way until work, and they don't know what to wear, they WILL spend hours of decision on what to wear. :P "....Clothes can often be used to define social statuses...." Not really. While famous brands such as North Face can make you seem richer than others, nobody wears rags to school or sparkling jewelry. Normally it is hard to tell how rich a person is based on their clothes if you do not know the brand. "people will have to rely on personality rather than the outfit they are wearing. " People usually don't depend on what they wear to "rise in social statuses". No study has shown that people with "high social status" wear amazing designer clothing. "poor...have ragged clothes..." So....what makes you think that they'll be able to afford the school uniform? Parents are shown to complain about prices in source [1] above. " There really isn't really a way to express yourself using clothes. Clothing is only something you wear and, in no way, can be used to define yourself." Wrong. As an example said by source [4], "Some people who have a very conservative personality won't wear low cut clothes they will wear long sleeves and professional clothing." In addition, as said by source [5], "Clothing choices are rarely neutral, and our inner secrets can be read in our choices. " These two sources clearly show that clothing can express personality. While wearing a uniform, the only ways to express oneself is with measly bracelets and necklaces, both which are barely visible compared to normal clothing. And I didn't say uniforms do not affect how people act. I said uniforms do not really affect how bullies harm kids and a person's normal clothing does not affect a bully's insults either. I extend my argument concerning the fact that school uniform going against the US constitutional beliefs of freedom of expression, which she failed to refute. Oh, and my opponent has yet to cite a single source. Onto you, con! [4] http://www.ask.com... [5] http://www.psychologies.co.uk...

Since you are so persistant, I will make arguments...

    School uniforms should be banned.

Once again all points stated are false. Since you are so persistant, I will make arguments underlining the benefits of Since you are so persistant, I will make arguments underlining the benefits of school uniforms, but first I shall refute. REFUTATIONS "1st again like I said before it is against the first amendment." 1st I would like to point out you still fail to meet your BoP. You show no evidence that it goes against the first amendment. Before even explaining how it doesn't go agains the first amendment I would like to point the most obvious thing. Uniforms aren't only in America. Uniforms are worn all over the world, and not every country has the same amendament as America. In fact, few other countries even have amendaments. Now to continue on to the 1st amendament. Since you failed to meet your BoP, which is already pretty much a loss, I will share mine. The first amendament is the following: "The First Amendment guarantees freedoms concerning religion, expression, assembly, and the right to petition. It forbids Congress from both promoting one religion over others and also restricting an individual’s religious practices. It guarantees freedom of expression by prohibiting Congress from restricting the press or the rights of individuals to speak freely. It also guarantees the right of citizens to assemble peaceably and to petition their government. " [1] It guarantees freedoms concerning religion, expression, assembly and the right to petition. It forbids congress for stopping religious practices. It guarantees freedom of expression. In the first amendament, when they speak of freedom of expression, they mean the right to speach. Not expressing yourself through clothing and money. You can tell they speak solely of speach when they say "restricting the press or right of individuals to speak freely". So as you can see, making people wear uniforms is not against the first amendament. "2nd I am not saying that everyone has to wear clothes different everyday. 3rd Just the choice of individuality." Neither are valid reasons to prohibit uniforms. Both are biased answers. You need not clothing to express your individuality, you can do so through a variety of other ways such as art and dancing. ------------------------ Since you are so persistant, I will now list reasons why uniforms are beneficial, and shouldn't be removed. CONTENTION 1: BULLYING PREVENTION As the source I posted in previous rounds, people are bullied due to their apperance. This not only concernes their physical natural bodies, however the clothes they wear as well. With uniforms, everyone wears the same clothing, and so bullying someone for their clothes is no longer an option. So, one way that people are bullied is completly abolished. So, though it doesn't stop bullying, it weakens it in a way. CONTENTION 2: MONEY SAVING An average uniform for everything cost about 200$. [2] The average amount of clothes a household spends on clothing is roughly 2000$. Dividing this into a family of four would result in about 500$ a year. With uniforms, since the majority of the time you wear your uniform, the amount of clothes you buy becomes much less. This will end up costing less money per child so that low income families could afford clothing. Contention 3: Restricts inapropriate clothing Yes, there are already school dress codes to prevent this, however the consequences are suddel. However, uniforms are much more serious. Not wearing them could end up in suspension. So, since the consequences are severe, inapropriate clothing will be worn much less. ------------------------------------ As you can see, there is no valid reason to prohibit uniforms. They aid people in saving money, prevent bullying and even inapropriate clothing. Banning uniforms, you are irrationally banning benefits. Sources: [1]http://www.law.cornell.edu... Thus causing to pay a whole lot of money for clothes were...

School uniforms should not be allowed in schools

I want to thank you for your arguments in my first debate this truly made my day. To start my rebuttal I will find counterexamples or disprove your claims. 1) You are prepared to state that "school uniforms save both time and money" But that is not exactly true. a) There is many uniforms that cost from 8 to 50$ a piece, meaning 50$ possibly for a single shirt, polo, skirt, pants, etc. ab) There is many types of uniforms i.e. Regular uniforms, rally uniforms, p.e. and formal dress uniforms. Thus causing to pay a whole lot of money for clothes were regular will cheaper. B) The family will still buy regular clothes because since the student will probably want to wear something more comfortable in their free time. Thus defeating the whole "uniforms will save family money" claim. 2) You are prepared to state that uniforms will end a social class discrimination. A) Families who have less money can only afford to pay for a couple complete uniforms options thus making the student wear the same outfit often causing it to get more worn and more used thus causing wear so the outfit may be torn and worn out. And the student may feel embarrassed to know his/her family can not afford better clothes. B) Other students will still find ways to gossip and bully other students. Even with the clothes factors out of the equation kids will still bully that is a given fact that has stood the test of time. 3) You are prepared to state that uniforms may improve student safety. A) There is still going to be a bullying problem causing a unsafe environment B) People can still hide weapons and drugs in backpacks, in their in their waistband of their pants, and cars if they have one. C) Uniforms can still be stolen to. Cited: How much is it.org http://education.newarchaeology.com... and some various opinions asked at my school.

This is because everyone would be wearing the exact same...

    Uniforms

I believe uniforms are vital in school. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, Between the years 2015 and 2016 22% of public schools acquired uniforms. This is because uniforms are believed to help students focus more on education than what they are wearing. If students are wearing expensive clothes at school, They will definitely regret it. The clothes might get stained, Painted on or even ripped. Even with stitching, Expensive clothes look horrible when ripped. Furthermore, Students have fewer chances of getting bullied when wearing uniforms. This is because everyone would be wearing the exact same clothes; therefore, There would be no reason to bully others. No one wants to get bullied for what they like to wear. On trips, Students are supposed to wear school uniforms. When they get lost, It will be easier to find them. It is better than searching for a specific person with clothes anybody can wear. We can't deny that kids adore the thought of not having to decide what to wear each day. Instead of spending hours of time putting together outfits, A student simply puts on their uniform. Chant'e Haskins shared her opinion after going from a school with no uniforms to one with uniforms. She says after wearing the uniform for a whole school year she "was so used to wearing the uniform it did not even bother me anymore. " Chant'e adds she saved time in the morning by not having to pick out an outfit and was able to customize her look with accessories to keep some individuality. Proponents suggest kids who wear school uniforms feel more connected to their school, Encounter less bullying, And have a more professional attitude. All of these factors contribute to more positive behaviour in school. In one school's online survey, About 25% of student respondents said they believe school uniforms would promote positive behaviour. It is generally thought that students who wear school uniforms behave more appropriately in the school environment. They believe that uniforms dictate a stricter atmosphere and that students who wear uniforms are more likely to follow school rules. Again, I must repeat that school uniforms are beneficial in many ways to both the students and the school.
