For example, an expensive private school will most likely...

    School Uniform

I think that school uniforms are not good, but not bad either. It all depends on what school you go to. For example, an expensive private school will most likely have uniforms because people think that uniforms keep kids from forming gangs and misbehaving. This is not true, because there is a school close to where I live that has a uniform, yet there is almost always someone with a broken limb due to school fights. A lot of schools think of dressing freely as a privilege. If the students at that school are unruly (which is usually the case), then they give them uniforms. The students are unhappy with the uniforms and start misbehaving even more. This pretty much destroys the chance of getting to dress freely. I don't really have an opinion on school uniforms. I just don't think it matters if a school has them or not.

First I will go over the meaning of the resolution...

Schools should have uniforms for students.

First I will go over the meaning of the resolution Observation 1 meaning of the resolution: Since the resolution says should, it means I must prove should uniforms be considered due to some benifits. Now since the resolution says "schools should have uniforms for students" and not "it should be required for schools to have uniforms for students" it means this is an option, kind of like school lettermen's it could just be something to show off. Observation 2: opponents rules Since my opponent says no sources can be used in this debate then overall vote for sources should just be tie. So yeah I will be backing up the following points next round. 1. School uniforms would be optional 2. School uniforms would keep boys from looking at girls in a rather naughty way and help schools enforce clothing requirements 3. Since school uniforms have some benefits no reason not to have them available to those who want them.

Private Schools Should Have Their Students Wear Uniforms

My Arguments 1. Uniforms may increase a student’s self esteem because they do not have to worry constantly to be better dressed than those around them. [1] Many kids are discouraged by the fact that they don't own, or cannot afford some of the clothing other kids can. Uniforms put all kids at the same level, and takes that much more stress off the students that cannot afford the latest "fashion". [2] By implementing uniforms confidence is boosted and negative peer pressure is eliminated. Over 75% of schools that implemented school uniforms noticed a drop in peer pressure. [3] 2. Uniforms improve learning by not allowing kids to be distracted. Clothes can be a huge distraction when you are in the classroom, especially if you are bored. Kids always want to know what others are wearing and even judge other students over it. Uniforms eliminate this problem and helps kids to stay focused in class. 3. Uniforms show that everyone there with you is part of your school. It shows you are all part of a team. It promotes school spirit and shows that everyone there is "on the same side". [4] This togetherness helps to eliminate division among students at the school and reduces bullying; giving a sense of community is beneficial to the mental well being of a student. [5] 4. Uniforms help the school faculty to quickly identify who is part of the school and in the end could actually help in keeping strangers and potentially dangerous people off the campus. This helps to make students feel safer at school. School uniforms may also eliminate gang and clique symbols bringing about a feeling of safety and togetherness. Safety is very important when increasing the amount of students who enroll in a school. 5. Bullies like to pick on kids who are lesser than them, and therefore tend to pick on kids who do not wear quality or popular clothes. [6]By implementing school uniforms this problem is solved. School uniforms encourage discipline through neatness, order, and equality among students. [6] 6. School uniforms encourage creative forms of self expression. Since students lose the ability to express themselves in certain ways through the clothes they were, they will be more likely to express themselves through things such as their personality, academic performance, clubs, and sports. It pushes students to put themselves out there. 7. School uniforms reduce violence and student behavioral problems. [7] Long Beach, California District School held a study comparing violence and behavioral problem rates among students before and after uniforms were implemented. In the five years following the implementation of school uniforms there was an 86% drop in violent assaults. Vandalism cases dropped from 1409 to 106. [8] Almost 80% schools that implemented school uniforms noticed an improvement in student discipline. [9] School uniforms have helped improve schools, as emphasized by one study that finds that “various benefits to wearing uniforms were reported, including decreases in discipline, gang involvement and bullying; and increases in safety, eases of going to school, confidence and self-esteem. Additionally, school police data showed a 63 percent reduction in police log reports during the first year of implementation. Other decreases were noted in reports of gang-related activities and student fights, along with graffiti, property damage, battery and administrative assist. “[10] I await your response. [8] The U.S. Department of Education also found that school crime decreased 36%, sexual offenses decreased 74%, and fights between students dropped 51% after school uniforms were implemented.[13] Almost 80% schools that implemented school uniforms noticed an improvement in student discipline. [9] Schools that implemented school uniforms also showed to have a higher graduation rate and attendance rate than schools without school uniforms. [11] [12] School uniforms have helped improve schools, as emphasized by one study that finds that “various benefits to wearing uniforms were reported, including decreases in discipline, gang involvement and bullying; and increases in safety, eases of going to school, confidence and self-esteem. Other decreases were noted in reports of gang-related activities and student fights, along with graffiti, property damage, battery and administrative assist. “[10] Contentions Controllable Factors vs. Uncontrollable Factors My opponent brings up that since uniform implementation eliminates the bully’s ability to focus on things like your clothes, they may instead bully someone for something they cannot control like their personality or how they look. This is not a problem of school uniforms. The problem rests in the bullies, not uniform implementation. By eliminating free dress, bullies cannot attack someone for a controllable factor, which would be what clothes they wear. Eliminating it has a plethora of other benefits but one is that it beings all students on the same level to eliminate this form of controllable factor bullying. Uncontrollable factor bullying however, can never be stopped. That sort of bullying would mean that bullies will always find a way to bully someone, even if all controllable factors are eliminated. At this point, the problem rests in the bullies and not by any other external means. If bullying gets that bad it is up to the school to put a stop to it the central problem, which again would be the bullies and not any external factor that may be a victim to bullying. Takes Away Creativity This is a small price to pay for the plethora of benefits that uniforms create. In addition, by implementing uniforms students are forced to be able to express themselves in different ways, whether it be through personality, clubs, or other things. In addition, private schools gain no benefit from allowing students free dress, but they do benefit from having students wear uniforms. [1] http://everydaylife.globalpost.com... As you can see in the arguments I presented, every individual argument for having students wear uniforms certainly outweighs a student not being able to wear what they want. In addition, I argued that by implementing school uniforms it focuses on kids being able to self identify themselves through other means, such as through personality and hobbies. My opponent states that if kids do not wear their own clothes they will be more likely to be made fun of for things like their personality. Cutting down on bullying through controllable factors is key. A controllable factor in this case would be implementing uniforms and doing away with free dress. However, people who bully others for uncontrollable factors cannot be stopped, such as bullying someone for how they look or their personality. The problem then, rests in focusing on bullying and eliminating it more than it focuses on eliminating factors that cause bullying. In the end, the bully is the problem, not the factors that cause bullying. [1] http://everydaylife.globalpost.com... [2] http://www.eduguide.org... [3] https://www.dickies.com... And my argument does not contain Red Herring because...

    Whether students should wear uniforms

School uniforms are not necessarily expensive, most schools allow students to purchase uniforms from outside the school, meaning you can always find discounts while back to school shopping. And I agree other efforts can be made to make students feel united, like joining a club or a team. But the reality is the whole student body can't participate in one single club or one team, the best way to include the entire student body in a unifying manner is to appoint students to professional school attire, which they will be using in their future careers as well. And uniforms are not stripping of them of their individuality instead it will be used to even the starting points in all students' character, and allow them to be judged on their actions in the school as in joining clubs or participating in school events, instead of how many name brand clothes you have or whether or not you are under the poverty line. Which in turn is preparing them for their future careers, because in reality you will be hired on how many internships or volunteer work you've done, your actions not how good you look in a suit. And my argument does not contain Red Herring because everything I said is relevant to school uniforms, its just one of the reasons school uniforms are promoted and bullying is a big reason, the topic of safety is commonly brought up and what it does is make gang identification is obscured. Group violence and theft are dissipated... Children are no longer identified by their 'colors.' Uniform dress alleviated the feelings of imminent danger for students who were afraid they might inadvertently dress in gang colors. As well as prevent bullying as I've stated before. Your argument on the other hand presents itself with the straw man fallacy because you misrepresented my conclusion by saying it strips individuality and then attacked it with the oncoming premises. Conclusion: School uniforms are Inexpensive, safe, and should be required by schools

School Uniforms should be allowed in Shcool

Before we go on with this debate, I will ask you to not plagiarize off of other sites while not give them credit. It is not right to plagiarize off of other people, and even worse to no give them credit. You have obviously plagiarized, word for word, every single statement off of "http://everydaylife.globalpost.com...;. You also have plagiarized off of,"http://occupytheory.org...;. Finally, you have copied off of another DDO member's idea and had not given him credit, naming the person "Anonymous". I do believe that only the last 3 sentences are actually original so I will only respond to those. Plagiarism is not a good practice while debating or anywhere else, and I hope you will fix this or I will have to say that you shall lose by forfeit. I want to hear your opinions in your own words, not the opinions and ideas of some other random person. For this reason, I have chosen not to answer your arguments this round besides the last three sentences. Thank you. Answers to Last Three Sentences 1st sentence: All cities do not have serious gang violence. But all of the bigger cities and even a lot of the smaller ones do, and if this is prevented from all schools, then the schools with gangs will benefit. Also, the federal government does not know enough of gang movement to know exactly which cities the gangs are in, so they cannot just enforce these laws in cities where they think gangs are. And what in the world do the students being gay have to do with the conversation? 2nd sentence: Smart intruders who are planning specifically to attack the school probably cannot be prevented because of their prior planning. But there might be intruders that have a gun and just want to kill people with it. These are the people that could be identified without a school uniform and dealt with accordingly. 3rd sentence: If everyone is wearing school uniforms, then no one will be picked on because everyone is wearing it. You cannot pick on someone else for something you are doing yourself.

While I understand that we certainly don't want students...

    All schools shouldn't have uniforms

Those rules seem fair enough. While uniforms do give off a professional atmosphere for the children, I do not see how normal clothes can be distracting. Does that mean teachers should wear uniforms too? While I understand that we certainly don't want students coming to school in a bikini or a banana costume, a respectable dress code with no uniform should be reasonable for all schools. Also, parents shouldn't be forced to pay loads of money for uniforms which cost much more than regular clothes. Uniforms are simply not needed and do not affect the school at all.

    Should schools require uniforms

I Believe that school uniforms should be in all schools. it would teach kids to accept each other more and help kids find themselves, instead of worrying about how to fit in as far as dressing goes, and it would help kids follow the dress code of their school. If more schools required that a student wear uniforms maybe they wouldn't be so expensive but there are places you can get them cheap, just like every other expensive thing in this world , and usually a school will offer a loan uniform to the kids who can't afford one.

should schools make it mandatory for students to wear uniforms during school time.

Ok i will start this off, to me if my school made us wear uniforms i would not be happy for one that would be a drastic change for me, because i have never had to wear a school uniform other than CPI but thats not school thats trades. on the other hand i feel that your cloth tells about a persons personality and it shows what they like to wear. and i feel that a uniform constricts them from there creativeness in cloths. But i know that some people may wear inappropriate cloths and i hopeful they get that taken care of and just because someone wears something that is not school appropriate that does not mean you should jump the gun and mandate uniforms but what they should do is make rules about what type of cloth are appropriate like no shorty shorts, and no perverted cloths, one those students are about as old as 18 and under and there just not old enough to be wearing that kind of wardrobe. So thats what i have to state now its your turn, make it good.

School uniforms should be required by U.S. public schools.

I would like to thank my opponent for replying. Reduces Bullying No matter what you dress students in, they will always find a way to pass judgement upon their peers. If it's not based upon the style of clothes worn there are many other superficial ways to judge people- mainly physical appearance, personality, and athleticism.Yes, judging people upon thier appearance can be bad in schools. However making everyone wear the same type of clothes is not going to make the problem magically disapear. Instead of hiding from the problem why not tackle it head on? Teach your kids to accept the odd kid out. Teach your kids not to judge based upon superficial criteria. Kids can be taught to be open to all sorts of people. However, by making everyone wear the same types of clothes, I believe you are just sending the message that since you can't accept each other when you are different, we're going to make you all the same. How will your child ever cope in the adult world when they actually do encounter someone who is different then themselves? Dressing for Success i can't find any actual statistics that children in Kids can be taught to be open to all sorts of people. However, by making everyone wear the same types of clothes, I believe you are just sending the message that since you can't accept each other when you are different, we're going to make you all the same. How will your child ever cope in the adult world when they actually do encounter someone who is different then themselves? Dressing for Success i can't find any actual statistics that children in uniforms are more successful. I'm not saying you're wrong, but could you provide me with this information? Money Saving Firstly, uniforms have not saved my family money. If one avoids buying name brand clothing, clothes can be relatively affordable. When my mom bought my brother his uniforms, she bought him 2 separate outfits. 2 golf shirts, 2 pairs of pants, 1 sweatshirt and 1 vest came to around $250.00. She could have easily bought a full weeks worth of street clothing (7 shirts, 3 pairs of pants) for slightly less money. Mind you, we aren't in the habit of buying new wardrobes every time a new school year starts, this is just a comparison. It should also be noted that when you buy uniforms, regular street clothing also needs to be bought for weekends and during the summer. Time Saving I suppose it would save time, but this seems very trivial. Respect and Attention Although many claim wearing different clothing is distracting, i find this hard to believe. Unless a peer is adorned in shiny mirrors or has a foot-tall mohawk, most have no problem paying attention. Now that i have covered my opponents arguements I will address my own- Individualism How can we expect our childrento accept different people from themselves if there are sorrounded by people dressed identically to them? Also, children should be able to express themselves, emotionally and physically, through their clothing.

I find your accusations very offensive. ... I think that...

Students should have to wear school uniforms

Maybe I should have been more specific. The schools do exist. Look up "http://www.mcsk12.net... " My current school, Eminence High, also has a website. Look up "http://www.eminence.kyschools.us...; they exist. When I said 500 people per class, I meant in my graduating class, not every classroom. There is anywhere from 7 to 30 students per classroom, depending on what class it was. Also, there were 2 or 3 teachers per subject because there were so many students. The school does have a dress policy. If you want to see what it is, go to this website: http://www.mcsk12.net... I find your accusations very offensive. For your information, I am the smartest person in my GRADUATING CLASS. I am taking college courses at Bellarmine University. I focus on my school work. In fact, I take pride in my academic accomplishments. You have no idea what I do. I do not obsess about my clothes. I throw on what I pull out of my dresser. The truth is, I DO NOT CARE about my clothes. You would have to know me personally to know why. So you can assume all you want. But the reality is, you do not know me at all. The kids Cordova High had a total disregard for policy. You are under the misconception that all kids like to follow the rules. Let me make a suggestion, go visit Memphis. Maybe that will open your eyes to the truth about students' feelings for policy. The fact is that students hate being told what to do. That is why tension rise. Not because everybody is wearing the same thing, but because they are being forced to wear clothes that are uncomfortable. Your argument about why uniforms are good for parents is not very logical. Parents still have to BUY the uniforms, in addition to clothes that their kids wear outside of school. With no uniform policy, the students can wear what clothes they already have. I think that I will list all of my academic accomplishments next round if you want me to.

Uniforms cannot be totally enforced in public schools...

Whether students should wear uniforms Part 2

School Uniforms promote school staffs control over the students. Students are no longer given the tools need to succeed and are instead forced to conform in order to succeed. Wearing school uniforms can cause stress on a student to dress and act like everyone else in order to abide by the rules. Public Schools should not be able to enforce uniform dress codes because they are free institutions open to all. Uniforms cannot be totally enforced in public schools because it can then violate the open policy of accepting students. Students who cannot economically afford a student uniform can become discouraged from attending school and feel unwelcome. Student Uniforms do little to improve a students education. If students aren't distracted by their clothing choices they will find something else to get side tracked with. Student mandated uniforms will take away from student expressive individuality. Some students express themselves through their clothing choices and find common interests with others based on shared fashion choices. If a student can't express themselves through their outfit choices their personal identity and individuality is compromised. Thought school uniforms would aim at increasing students success, the solution is too controlling and the benefits wont out weight the means. If all students are forced to wear uniforms what would be next? Administrative approved backpacks?

First of all not all families can afford uniforms because...

    All schools should have uniforms

I am on the con side because in my my opinion schools should not have uniforms. First of all not all families can afford uniforms because they're way over priced like $70 for a single t-shirt when you can get the same shirt without the logo on it for $15 and then get the logo printed on it for only $5. Then you just need to get the pants which could be $25 or less and there you've saved about $25. Plus otherwise families spend and average of about $350 a year (I think) on uniforms and then once they leave that school they can't sell the uniforms so they just basically throw away money. Especially when some families pay extra for a Catholic school and now getting charged a ton more money for something thats requiring but they don't want. It's no different than someone coming up to you and forcing you to pay them money or you not allowed back at school. Other than money the school has to be careful about customizing the uniforms because if they accidentally use a uniform that another school is already using the other school could get a right to sue them and then they won't have enough money to take on the school. Alot of people probably already know this one but using hot lunches could help. I mean spending $1200 on hot lunches per year and then making $2000 your school just found a way to make a simple $800. I could go on with about 100 more reasons why but one of the most important ways is it takes the kids creativity and i thought schools were supposed to tell kids they always be themselves. Again I'm only 10 years old so what do i know

Children may get shunned by other kids because of...

Uniforms should be banned from schools

First of all, having to wear uniforms lessens the chance of being bullied by other students, for clothing is a big issue in schools. Children may get shunned by other kids because of difference of style. Not banning the uniforms of a school might decrease the bullying rate in schools. Another point, you mentioned how: "Students will have their first amendment, granted to them at birth, infringed." The Bill of Rights was granted at birth, but it will not be infringed. There are free dress days. Students can also wear whatever they want outside of school. Not all children get a proper education, the ones who do have the chance are educated. Uniforms don't affect learning. Uniforms are a student's pride.

I accept this debate. ... I will start out by saying...

Kids shouldn't wear uniforms to school

I accept this debate. I will start out by saying that wearing uniforms means that kids won't wear any inappropriate clothing.
