    School Uniforms Not Mandatory

In my opinion school uniforms should not be mandatory. Students should have the will to express themselves through there clothing. Some girls don’t like to wear skirts or can’t wear skirts. Boys like to play. they wear t – shirts and shorts so they can move around. Not every boy likes to be dressed up. Then theres also the money problem. Uniforms aren’t the cheapest clothing and some familys can barely buy normal clothing. Wearing a uniform does not make kids smarter or beahve better what so ever so there really is no point in wearing uniforms. Second uniforms would cut down on a lot of bullying,...

are school uniforms good or bad

Well for one thing school uniforms make everything more bland which in this case is good, you wouldn't be distracted by all the fancy clothing kids wear. Second uniforms would cut down on a lot of bullying, because everybody is wearing the same clothes if someone makes fun of your outfit they are at the same time making fun of theirs. Second it makes it way easier to make sure that people aren't being inappropriate with their clothes, like no bra and a see through shirt. It really makes it easier to pick clothes for school which would cut down on stress levels with teens.

Individuality does not only show through the clothes that...

    School Uniforms Shouldn't be Required.

Uniforms do actually save you money in the long run let's go ahead and pretend that 4 uniform sets (mandatory pants and shirt w/shoes) costs $500. In truth, it would cost much less ($280 would be more realistic) but this is suppose to be outrageous. For the one time cost of $500, the student will be able to wear that same uniform in the span of four years of high-school. "The article references a recent study showing the average 10-year old is outfitted with $729.50 in back-to-school apparel and supplies. While that number may not come as a surprise to most parents, the responses for apparel items are very telling." [1] "Most parents responded that they spent $48 on pants for their children and that $30 was a "reasonable" price for a T-shirt. Using those figures, the average American family is encountering a figure approaching, and in some cases surpassing, $300 per child for back-to-school clothing. Contrast that figure with the cost of a year's worth of school uniforms. The cost of a year's worth (Five tops and five bottoms) of school uniform or standardized dress code clothing is $150 (www.frenchtoast.com)." [1] So take $729.50 mutliply it by 4 and you have $2918. Take $500 (outrageous overstated) multiply it also by 4 (for each year) and you have $2000 (saved $918) Replace that with $280 (more realistic) multiply it by 4 and your expense is $1120 (you have saved $1,798) Now use $150 as the source recommended and you have an expense of only $600 over the course of 4 years (Here you have saved $2,318) So you say that uniforms do not save you money in the long run is false. Individuality does not only show through the clothes that you wear but also through your character as well. The way that you hold and portray yourself is much more important than the clothes that you wear. All clothes do is amplify the effective. Similarities pull people together even if it's he hate for they're uniform. It still drives the student population inward towards each other. Cliques become slightly harder to form and thus more people are included. You're correct in saying if someone isn't smart or physically incapable they will get bullied but let's face uniforms cannot save everyone. Of course the bottom 10% of the social percentile will continue to get picked on. If you're not good people then your not no good with people it's a personality to flaw that the students will have to overcome and they must work to achieve that. school uniforms should be mandatory

I don't think anyone is intimidated by dressing up for school, seeing as how the stereotypical high school in movies does not really exist. Also, students during class are usually concentrated in studies instead of clothes anyway, unless someone is wearing something so ridiculous they can't take their eyes off of it. Even if schools had uniforms, people would still be getting judged even though they would be wearing the same thing. Finally, schools in poor places cannot afford uniforms.

Yes, some people don't look as good as others in certain...

School Uniforms are a good idea

Thank you Con for another great argument Supporting my arguments: 1. "Whether the school supplies the uniform or not, there could still be much competition between articles of clothing. Once again, I would like to bring up the point that there are several different types of khakis and polos." I don't think there is going to be competition at all, I understand that different companies make khakis and polos but there isn't much difference between them ex. Target brand http://www.target.com... kohls brand http://www.kohls.com... Khaki is Khaki there aren't many distinct differences between them, no matter what brand is purchased. If schools don't supply the uniform they often times suggest where to purchase ones that follow their guidelines or specify what color or style they want students wearing. There isn't going to be competition because the whole point of the uniform is to look unified, consistent, or identical. 2. Yes, some people don't look as good as others in certain colors but the point of the uniform is to take focus off of appearance and what looks good or not good on others, if you wore the same uniform as everyone else I'm sure you wouldn't be the only one to not look good in that color and others wouldn't judge you because they would be wearing the same thing and would understand that you have to wear it. Wearing a uniform wouldn't belittle their style either because on the weekends and their free time students can wear whatever they choose, explore different styles and express themselves with clothes in any way they choose. 3. Uniforms save time in the morning for students, some like you take thirty seconds to pick out an outfit but others take longer wither way that time can be saved. Uniforms are also better for parent's routines, in an interview one mother says that she likes the idea that her daughter wears a uniform because she just washes them all over the weekend and doesn't have to worry about her not having something to wear during the week. You are also probably older than 5yrs old, younger students struggle with parents on what they are going to wear, they want to wear crazy outfits or they can't decide what they want to wear, but with a uniform there is no struggle or questioning because they have something already picked. 4. Uniforms can unite students, maybe the cheerleader won't befriend a band geek but uniforms do break economic barriers for students and they can make students feel like they belong or are a part of a community. My argument: School is a child's job in a sense, wearing the uniform gives them the sense that they are going to school to work as if it were their job. In 1994 in a California school uniforms were required, as a result attendance increased, and test scores increased. Researchers tie those increases to the fact that the uniforms make the children take school more seriously, and put more of a focus on education. In schools today there are also cases where weapons are brought to school, and certain pieces of clothing represent gang affiliation. By enforcing uniforms both of those issues would be eliminated or decreased within schools. Students wouldn't be able to conceal weapons under baggy clothing and specific clothing would be mandatory for all students. Sources: www.target.com www.kohls.com http://voices.yahoo.com...

Argument 3: Identification I stated: "In the events of...

School Uniforms Should Not Be Required in Schools

Argument 1: "School uniforms do not help students an any way at all" My opponent stated that I was being contradictory by saying "School uniforms do not help students an any way at all" and "Yes, by having everyone dress the same it may reduce some bullying" but I also stated that it would effect bullying in such a little way that it doesn't matter because barely any bullies bully people on what they wear. (And btw, I'm a girl) Argument 2: Expression of one's true self My opponent has stated "School uniforms do remove the expression threw clothes; however, children find many other forms of expression: threw gestures, action, and voice." And yes, people can express themselves threw their gestures, actions, and voices but most people express themselves the most they dress with the different colors and styles. Argument 3: Identification I stated: "In the events of natural disasters or emergencies, such as earthquakes, tornadoes, fires or terrorist attacks, it would be really hard for parents to identify their child from the midst of a milieu of similarly clothed children." Their are conditions where the parents would need to come to the aid of their children and they would need to identify their children. Like if their was a bad earthquake, fire, tornado, or terrorist attack and some people got killed or stuck in the rubble and the parents would then leave their work because they really care about their children. Argument 4: "And kids that are forced to wear uniforms will just be bullied by kids in other schools for having to wear uniforms." Maybe the home schoolers would bully the public schoolers. Dress codes just state light restrictions. At my school the dress code is "No butt, no boobs, no belly". Whereas school uniforms say exactly what you have to wear. As I stated before "University of Missouri assistant professor, David Brunsma. In his 2004 book, The School Uniform Movement and What It Tells Us About American Education: A Symbolic Crusade, Brunsma reviewed past studies on the effect of uniforms on academic performance. He also conducted his own analysis of two enormous databases, the 1988 National Educational Longitudinal Study and the 1998 Early Childhood Longitudinal Study. Brunsma concluded that there is no positive correlation between uniforms and school safety or academic achievement." Also, 98% of students that I interviewed said they would be unhappy to be forced to wear uniforms. If kids are too unhappy they will be likely to drop out.

It is something to be celebrated however one is to think...

    School Uniforms Shouldn't be Required.

Uniforms help to distinguish students from outsiders. Which is beneficial to the faculty in helping supervise and provide a safe environment for there kids to learn. Students can also conceal weapons in their personalized clothing and accessories which brings dangers and bad press to the school. Not to mention extreme forms of bullying. This is video is an example of how students can conceal weapons in their clothing. https://www.youtube.com...... Now I'm not saying that the students should be in uniform all the time. I believe that students should be award when they are behaving and performing well. So maybe once every month a civvies day will be in order when students will be able to come in in their regular clothing and embrace their individuality. It is something to be celebrated however one is to think of the tribe before themselves. It is the Bullworth way. (I just wanted to say sorry lol ) Rebuttal 1 Now, time to rebut: " 'For the one time cost of $500, the student will be able to wear that same uniform in the span of four years of high-school.' Not true, children can have growth spurts and outgrow the uniform, and because such new uniforms need to be bought. In addition, after uniforms are bought, old clothing is practically useless, only to be worn during weekends, only 2/7 of the time. This ratio amplifies over a big time, and soon enough, the difference between how often the uniform is worn compared to the normal clothing is in the hundreds. Years make that number high up in the thousands!" I actually rebutted this statement later on. First off, I had said that $500 was an exaggerated amount and that it was still less than the average cost of regular clothing each year. Which was $729.50. If we multiplied that by 4 years you will still save $918 compared to regular clothing. Yes children do have growth spurts and outgrow uniform but in most cases that occurs toward the end of year but since everyone is different the parent would just buy the new uniform set early instead of the beginning of the succeeding new year. The same cycle will apply. Rebuttal 2: "Nobody cares about your clothes except yourself and your parents, and that is the reason why school uniforms aren't needed. Why should they be required? That only makes the school administrators' jobs tougher--they have to make sure the uniforms are worn the whole day, and students have to bring checks to school to buy the uniform. " Not true. Try picking up girls looking a chump. Appearance is important that's what a uniform teaches people. It also teaches students to dress conservatively. Uniforms can be altered to fit everyone's individuality in most cases. The alterations are slight but noticeable if you've been wearing them long enough. Uniforms do shape you up for the real world. As far as school administrators go there's not much of a problem. If they're out of uniform they'll be sent home or to the attendance office to get a uniform pass. Easy and in most cases teachers don't bother to check unless it's obvious or you're causing trouble. My opponent has forfeited 2 rounds. I hope the voters are sensible enough to know who to vote..

clothes may help portray and express your personality but...

School Uniforms are a good idea

Supporting my arguments: 1. I don't think I am contradicting myself because I never stated that the school had to supply the uniform. When I talk about a uniform I am using the dictionary definition "an identifying outfit or style of dress worn by the members of a given profession, organization, or rank." A uniform has to be consistent whether it be color or style, but some can be identical. Where am i contradicting myself? Children won't feel pressured to have brand names to fit in if all just had to wear khakis and a certain polo. Those khakis may not be identical because they aren't made by the same company or they aren't school supplied but they aren't as distinct or different as one child's Nike sneaker vs another's old tennis shoe. I was explaining two examples of how schools require students to wear uniforms. Some schools supply them, others just give guidelines for them either way the idea of a uniform, the idea of a constant style or color is a good idea and that was the argument I was trying to get at. 2. Yes. clothes may help portray and express your personality but because you put on a uniform does not mean that your personality is sucked out of you. For example in stores employees have to wear uniforms, just because they wear a uniform doesn't mean that they aren't going to be themselves. Same thing in hospitals, nurses have to wear scrubs, just because they have to wear a specific type of clothing(a uniform) doesn't mean they are going to be a different person. 3. When I say distraction, I don't mean that students are having conversations in class I mean that students in their own minds look at others clothes and may judge or feel insecure about what they have compared to others and feelings such as insecurity or the pressure put on by peers to have certain brands or items could be a distraction to work, or a distraction from school. We go to school to learn and to socialize but other factors like bullying, like feeling we don't have the finances to buy things others have can weigh on a child's mind in class and distract them from the real reason they are going to school. 4. School uniforms certainly speed up the getting ready process, students would have to pick out what they had to wear if they did not wear a uniform. With uniforms you know what you have to wear and you don't have to spend time in the morning or the night before to pick out what to wear or look for something to wear. Rebuttal: In schools that have uniforms, they don't just have one uniform for cold weather. In schools they normally have a summer uniform and a winter uniform. For example for girls they may have the option to wear pants in the winter or tights with their skirts but in the summer they could just wear the skirt. Im positive no school makes their students suffer by wearing sweaters in the summer. Also not all places are hot in the summer some schools may only have one uniform because it is always hot there or always cold there and those uniforms are modified for that weather. Schools are also regulated on what conditions the students can go to school in. I know here in the U.S. if the temperature is over 90 degrees or something like that and there is no air conditioning in the school the students by law can not be in school. To conclude this point students have more than one uniform for temperature differences, the uniform will have the same style and color but they may be short sleeve for summer and long sleeve for winter. My argument: Uniforms encourage unity in school. When we see a sports team, they work together and are unified. There is just a feeling of unity you get when you put on a uniform, it makes you feel like you fit in or belong. If an entire school wears similar clothing or clothing consistent in color and style(uniforms) than they won't feel as ostracized or feel like they don't belong because they look like the other students, they might feel like they are a part of a team.
