And yet again, a person who cares deeply about how they...

    Uniforms at School!

Thank you Pro... "Or maybe bullies will just decide to leave the poor kid alone" Maybe. But with no statistics on what the bully would do, (Look for new things to make fun of him for or just stop) We can't use your argument as an assertion or proof that it will reduce bullying. "Unless a bully knows where somebody lives, he cannot bully him/her over the weekends. And on the weekends, the bullied kid can just hide in his house. Bullies don't purposefully go to other people's houses to bully them" I really don't think that'd be a valid solution to the bullying problem, having a child stay home and hide doesn't seem like a very practical solution. "How? Bullies don't enter other people's houses to see what the person is wearing. This would just get the bully into jail. This argument makes no sense" The argument was meaning to say that the bully would find a new flaw. Obviously Pro had misunderstood it, thus it made no sense to him as he stated. The argument is that rather than the bully or rather enemy of the student saying: "Rats foiled again..." He/she would just find a new flaw. Remember, bullying is the *repeated* act of unkindness. [1] It goes unasserted that the bully would literally only have one insult for a student, yet still bring it up time and time again. "Uniforms do help ensure equality. Kids are more equal compared to each other if they wear the same clothes" "Not even a shred of evidence is shown to assert that students stand in front of a mirror for half of an hour every morning." "Unfortunately, it would be very difficult for me to give a reliable source to prove this" I know it would. "However I think we can all assume that there are some (a minority) of people who care deeply about how they look" Sure, but to apply this to the majority of people would not be wise. And yet again, a person who cares deeply about how they look does not enjoy wearing an uncomfortable uniform. For example, girls often have to wear dresses or skirts, when they might feel more comfortable in trousers, and boys often have to wear button-up shirts and ties, which can also be uncomfortable for active children. "If this were untrue, then people wouldn't be wasting thousands of dollars on shopping for clothes" Over what period of time? "How would you know if students would feel ridiculous in uniforms? Where in your sources does it say this" Well, I did say that students who are self conscious about how they look would feel ridiculous in normal clothing let alone school uniforms. But I shall also assert that they are uncomfortable. "Respect for America is shown in schools not by making the students wear giant flags, but by making them say the Pledge of Allegiance. You show respect for America when saying the Pledge of Allegiance" That's the point. There is not only one way to respect your area of education. Notice Pro has also ignored the question on why it is important to respect your school, rather than having a neutral view on it. " The cost of a uniform is not greater" "After all, students can wear whatever they want on the weekends" Obviously, when you add normal clothing costs it would be more expensive, or at least the same price. "And if a law was to be put into place that all students should be required to wear uniforms, it is likely that the government will pay those fees. After all, in order for this law to work, all students would have to wear uniforms and there are some families who cannot afford this clothes" How do you think the Government would afford this? Where is the omens for this going to come from? It' not as if the Government has a magic pot of gold to fill every desire. ""Why would students be more compelled to wear a uniform than they would to follow the dress code?" If this was how they were taught from the very beginning (elementary school) then yes, students would wear the uniforms. Dress code wouldn't be a problem if there were uniforms" Why not apply the same logic to dress codes? If the students always have dress codes, then they would get used to it. This could be comparable to getting used to uniforms. "Do I really need sources to prove this?" That which can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence as well. If you're going to use it in an argument, I require a source for it. "Yes many students do wear 7 outfits a day" Really. Show me your source that says this. " There are even those who take 20 minute showers every day" I'm happy for them. This has nothing to do with the arguments at hand though. "I was simply stating my position. And I'm not sure what exactly my opponent's position is here. I ask for clarification" The point was that you never justified taking away their rights to express themselves. "this isn't the last round yet" Of course, I never implied that. I'm waiting to here back from Pro now. Many of the arguments/Questions were simply dropped... [1] http://www.americanhumane.org...

There should be school uniforms for sports teams for the...

    should there be school uniforms

There should be school uniforms for sports teams for the following reasons. A) If we didn't have uniforms for sports teams, people may find it difficult to identify people. Yes, a player in a sports team is likely to know most of the people in his team, but if one person on a team looked identical to another, and both were on different teams, then a uniform would definitely help differentiate between the two and not cause confusion. People watching sports games may also find it difficult to identify certain players for a school sports team. B) Some sports require safer equipment for you to play. Pads and a helmet are part of a Football uniform, and what happens when you take that away? More broken bones, more blood, and more disfigured muscles. Injuries in Football can get pretty ugly. Back in the 1900's when you didn't have as much safety equipment, you could actually get KILLED playing Football. And playing like they did back then could certainly lead to some serious injuries assuming there are no deaths. C) It would be far less creative to not use uniforms for our sports. We wear shirts everyday, and quite frankly, without sports uniforms, actual games would just look like kids playing around for recess. You don't get much of that team vibe. There's no school spirit in not wearinf uniforms and it would be very unusual since the norm today is for people to wear uniforms during games.

    School Uniforms

Thank you for such a swift response Pro. I would like to point out to the voters that Pro has his entire argument based off of personal experience, showing no valid proof of any Pro's to a dress code. For the sake of argument, let's compare two students. Student number one goes to a Public school, while Student Two goes to a private school, which enforces school uniforms. Student one goes annual shopping for clothes with his mother, and what he pays are listed here. 2 new jeans (most older ones still fit, as growth stops in the late teen years [1]) - 36.00 [2] 3 new Aeropostale shirts- 36.00 [3] 1 pair of tennis shoes- 30.00 (Nike) [4] School Supplies- 90.00 [5] For the sake of argument and my terrible ability with math, I have left taxes out of the equation, and the total amount spent for non-uniformed school students comes out to be 192.00 a year per child. Now lets travel to the other child who lives in the same neighborhood (for sake of argument), but instead of the public school, his parents send him to private school, where uniforms are enforced. 3 new slacks (dress code again changed for the school, and khakis cannot be worn with the uniform now)- 120.00 [6] 3 new dress shirts to follow dress code-60.00 [7] (this is not counting a tie, because some private schools do not require it) 1 pair of dress shoes- 45.00 [8] School supplies- 90.00 Now as you can see, we have already spent much more money than the public school non-uniformed student, and we haven't even gotten to the tuition yet. Average Private School Tuition- 8,549 [9] (This is an average, it may be different from your neck of the woods.) Now we are up to a whopping $8,864 spent on the private school. Now I do understand that not every year the dress code will change as stated in my example, I am simply using it in my argument to show how something like that could lead the family to have to spend more money. School Uniforms Should Not Be Required in Schools

School uniforms do not help students an any way at all. The take away students ability to express themselves through their clothes and how do they reduce bullying at all? Also, we are entitled to a free education. Therefore, students should not be required to buy uniforms. There have been studies done on if uniforms help kids academically at all and almost all of them have shown that uniforms have absolutely no effect at all on kids academic performance. That's why school uniforms should not be required in schools.

maybe so,But on the other hand they stop bullying, this is...

    School Uniforms Are Good

Ok,first of all I believe that uniforms can be a double edged sword. In your first point You made a valid point, you mentioned that they don't make students express themselves. maybe so,But on the other hand they stop bullying, this is the main problem that uniforms solve people from different parts of society attend school, lets say for example we have a poor student that has a very limited wardrobe with bad and torn clothes, a student who can afford to wear better and newer clothes will start annoying and bullying him for using the same clothes over and over and this has some really negative psychological and academic effects, children might start to lose confidence in themselves and maybe even hate themselves, because at school age students tend to enjoy bullying without much regard to the other person's feeling, and some people like to have a certain style in cloths that match their personal believes and style that might lead to bulling and making students feel not accepted for who they are,so the main reason for maybe so,But on the other hand they stop bullying, this is the main problem that uniforms solve people from different parts of society attend school, lets say for example we have a poor student that has a very limited wardrobe with bad and torn clothes, a student who can afford to wear better and newer clothes will start annoying and bullying him for using the same clothes over and over and this has some really negative psychological and academic effects, children might start to lose confidence in themselves and maybe even hate themselves, because at school age students tend to enjoy bullying without much regard to the other person's feeling, and some people like to have a certain style in cloths that match their personal believes and style that might lead to bulling and making students feel not accepted for who they are,so the main reason for uniforms is they reduce social conflict and violence in the schools,I boarded a school that doesn't have a uniform for two years and seen this first hand. Second of all uniforms Keep the school atmosphere studious and focused on education. Well dressed students do better in school and well dressed teachers command more respect, adding to that, having a uniform relieve the parents from the burden of buying fashionable and expensive clothes every now and then,as students demands might get higher than their parents abilities, in light of this, I contradict the point where you said that school uniform might be expensive because I believe that it's the other way around, they save money also some students may wear clothes that are really not appropriate for school environment and this happens a lot. Third of all I feel that uniforms make students take school environment more seriously,Uniforms improve discipline, self-esteem and self-respect. They focus attention upon learning and away from such distractions as fashion competition, they learn that they should take care of their uniform and be responsible enough not to let it get dirty as they will use them again adding to that, when wearing school uniform you'll have to act more responsibly outside the school also, if you were on a field trip for example and a young student got lost whoever finds him/her will know where they belong in case the student isn't able to give info about themselves. And finally I agree with your third point, but I believe that most if not all schools have alternatives for skirts like trousers for example,as I don't think that schools force short skirts without having an alternative for them and if there are, I think it's an individual case and those certain schools should change their dress code. Also uniform helps with small issues like 1- it provides an identity to the students. Intruders cannot enter school due to the school uniform. 2-Any sort of gang related identity or markings would not be an issue. In addition baggy clothing to used to hide weapons or drugs.

The California school that you mentioned was neither a...

School Uniforms are a good idea

The sad truth-of-the matter is that where you live can influence how you live. There are many regions filled with people that have been rendered poor by the downfall of our economy and that simply cannot afford to be as hygienic as others. As an aside, If such cases were 'investigated', as you stated in your past arguments, some detectives would have extremely busy schedules. I don't find it hard to believe that many families are in such a predicament, given the circumstances. I do not think that I am 'focusing on only a specific economical group of people' at all. In fact, I am focusing on how those people fit in with the rest of the school's population. 2. You say that a uniform encourages discipline and responsibility, and likewise to that, it will teach them to focus on their education. Not once in your fifth argument do you say how a uniform can do such things. I, for one, do not understand how something as simple as clothing can make one do better or worse in school. Of course it will make the school look more professional, but I find it doubtful that clothing styles can influence one's learning ability. 3. The California school that you mentioned was neither a public or private school. In the article that you posted, the author stated the following: "My 8-year old daughter attends a wonderful charter school and has since she began kindergarten." The following statement is a Wikipedia definition of the term 'charter school'. - "Charter Schools are primary or secondary schools that receive public money (and like other schools, may also receive private donations) but are not subject to some of the rules, regulations, and statutes that apply to other public schools in exchange for some type of accountability for producing certain results, which are set forth in each school's charter." As seen in the underlined text, a charter school has a higher expectation for greater achievements than public schools. The students at charter schools are held at a higher standard - what they wear has anything to do with their accomplishments. Supporting My Argument: Regardless of the scale of this 'rebellion', the fact of the matter is that students do not like having to make a commitment to a single uniform - that is the one and only point that I was trying to get across. The consequences of these kids' actions are completely insignificant to the matter at hand. Whether they got a detention, got expelled, got fined, or whatever - it has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not school uniforms are a good idea. Furthermore, the only thing that that fact suggests is that some dress code are simply way too strict. Conclusions: School uniforms are not in the best interest of schools around the country for the following reasons: 1. Uniforms rob students of their individuality. 2. Uniform Fittings can be costly and time-consuming. 3. Uniforms, depending on the style, may cost the school or the parents more money than regular clothing. 4. Uniforms cannot possibly unite a school of such manifold people. 5. There are several different types of khakis and polos. There would still be competition to who looks the best. 6. There is no way to put an end to bullying - this includes making uniforms mandatory. 7. Students could possibly rebel against their dress code / uniform policy. 8. Clothing styles cannot influence the academic performance of students. Throughout these five rounds, I believe I have supported and proved each of my arguments to the fullest extent of my ability. I would like to thank Pro for giving me such convincing arguments that I could work with. I hope that I can have the chance to debate with her again.

    School uniforms

Your mind on the matter should be on getting an education, and learning how to create an actual argument, rather then trying to wear "cute skirts". School is by no means a place to develop your fashion. School is an institution where you learn, not where you play. I understand that our current school system is very poorly executed, which enables people to see it as a place to goof off rather then to learn, such as yourself. The fact of the matter is, your priority should not be to wear "cute skirts". If you were to ask me, I think that we should have uniforms in public schools that are paid for by the students, instead of being financed by the state. This will create a sense of equality, as to seem less devisive in terms of how dress rules are applied to students. Also, I'm sure that cross country guys are not "aloud" to go shirtless on school grounds.
