Public School Students should wear School Uniforms

Thank you Evidence is only to be presented when asked for I will first be presenting my arguments, then refuting my opponent's arguments. First, some definitions. Public School- K-12 Schools run by the US federal government 1. Makes people equal in the eyes of others, thus stopping bullying Some schools when they add uniforms it changes the way the students act, for example on the kimatv news the school system in yakima started to use uniforms. After each school started to use uniforms the bullying rate when down by 50%. People may be poor or rich. Income disparity is a huge problem in today’s public school system. People are bullied and teased based on the type/condition of their clothes. With kids, there would be none of that. No one will tease or bully anyone because everyone is wearing the same uniform The impact that will come from this discovery will be huge, this is because kids a tormented by name calling and other types of bullying everyday and it ruins their lives. Bullying can cause suicidal and traumatic problems which is detrimental to students. 2. Stops Inappropriate clothes to be worn to school CEPI says that uniforms stops gang colors This is good because gangs won’t be able to communicate thus keeping gangs from committing crimes The Impact is that because gangs won’t communicate, they can’t commit crimes making the world a better place Less people die from gang related crimes, saving lots of lives 3. Kids can be readily identified in outside activities In a field Trip, if the whole school is wearing a uniform, then if the kid wanders off, the teacher will recognize him/her in a huge crowd because of his/her clothes. US Department of Education says that the uniforms can help teachers identify their students easier. This will keep the students from getting lost and thus keeping them safe. If the school has uniforms, then the kids will be safe. They cannot wander off and get into trouble or danger. This is especially beneficial for younger kids. Now, to my opponent's arguments My opponent talks about how it violates rights. However, some things, you need to give up for a better life. I would rather feel safe and give up a few rights. In fact, I would rather stay alive instead of dead with the ability to express myself. Obviously, life is much more important than the right to express oneself. Limiting the right to express oneself is not going to kill every child in the US.

The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states that...

    School uniforms should be banned

First of all, school uniforms restricts a student"s right to express themselves. The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." [1] Yet, some schools still enforce students to wear clothes that mostly represent their school, but not their students themselves. Also, in several Supreme Court cases such as Tinker v. Des Moines (1969) , the Supreme Court ruled in a 7-2 favor that "It can hardly be argued that either students or teachers shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate" [2] which other cases had similar decisions as well. Therefore, uniforms should be considered a boundary to an individual"s personality and identity. [1] https://www.law.cornell.edu... [2] http://www.uscourts.gov...

School Pupils Should Be Required To Wear School Uniforms

I was shocked to see that one of the most contested opinions on DDO were that pupils should have to wear school uniforms. I'm from the UK -- most schools require a uniform to be worn -- and this isn't even considered a debatable issue. I'm interested in hearing someone's opinion on this topic. School pupil: Any student below the age of 16 You will be Con -- against school uniforms. I'll start this off with a quick list as to why I believe uniforms are beneficial. 1. Creates a school identity/team spirit 2. Kids can focus less on fashion and trends, and more on education 3. Rich or poor, everyone is equal 4. Sets the pupils up for adult life; office jobs, uniformed work, dress codes etc. 5. Kids do not need to 'express themselves' through clothing; this is not appropriate in many jobs 6. Kids wandering out of school without permision can be easily identified and the school informed -- this prevents possible abductions and other incidents where the child can blend in without bring detected

Alright so first of all there are some schools out there...

    Should their be school uniforms

Alright so first of all there are some schools out there that have a community very different from one and another, that includes a poor to rich scale. If poor children wore very old and dirty clothes to school while the rich wore designer brands can you guess who would get picked on? I have heard a story about this school (I will keep it's identity secret) where on mufti day (where you get to wear what you want to school) the poor children would not want to go, why? Because they will be picked on of course! We must keep the mental health for our poor students well, healthy! Before you go rambling along about how the school should implement systems to keep bulling to a low, those never work! Trust me I have been there and done that even with uniforms I cannot imagine what would happen if we did not have uniforms. So put your uniform on and lets go to school!

School Uniforms are a good Idea

I support the idea of school uniforms. There are strong reasons for that. I wore school uniform from 7 to 15 years old and I'd never felt that it reflects on my personality or stops me from expressing myself. I knew that it was just a rule and I was never agains the discipline. Discipline lead to good results. So students were more concentrated on their studies than on their clothes and also they shouldn't spent at least 30-40 minutes in front of wardrobe choosing the best outfit for that day. In schools where uniforms are required there is decreasing of fights, violence among students, sexual offencies and what is important there is less comparision between people from different social levels. So students from families where cannot efford expensive and fancy clothes are more likely to feel equal to those from richer families.

School Uniforms Should not be Required

Wow! This "noob" is good! She might even be the first to beat me in this topic! Now, for my rebuttal.... "...hours of decisions of what to wear." That is a total exaggeration. No one takes hours to decide what to wear. And if they do, their parents will teach them to be faster, training their children for later jobs that do not require a uniform. School uniforms remove the training needed. If a person wears school uniforms all the way until work, and they don't know what to wear, they WILL spend hours of decision on what to wear. :P "....Clothes can often be used to define social statuses...." Not really. While famous brands such as North Face can make you seem richer than others, nobody wears rags to school or sparkling jewelry. Normally it is hard to tell how rich a person is based on their clothes if you do not know the brand. "people will have to rely on personality rather than the outfit they are wearing. " People usually don't depend on what they wear to "rise in social statuses". No study has shown that people with "high social status" wear amazing designer clothing. "poor...have ragged clothes..." So....what makes you think that they'll be able to afford the school uniform? Parents are shown to complain about prices in source [1] above. " There really isn't really a way to express yourself using clothes. Clothing is only something you wear and, in no way, can be used to define yourself." Wrong. As an example said by source [4], "Some people who have a very conservative personality won't wear low cut clothes they will wear long sleeves and professional clothing." In addition, as said by source [5], "Clothing choices are rarely neutral, and our inner secrets can be read in our choices. " These two sources clearly show that clothing can express personality. While wearing a uniform, the only ways to express oneself is with measly bracelets and necklaces, both which are barely visible compared to normal clothing. And I didn't say uniforms do not affect how people act. I said uniforms do not really affect how bullies harm kids and a person's normal clothing does not affect a bully's insults either. I extend my argument concerning the fact that school uniform going against the US constitutional beliefs of freedom of expression, which she failed to refute. Oh, and my opponent has yet to cite a single source. Onto you, con! [4] http://www.ask.com... [5] http://www.psychologies.co.uk...

School uniforms should not be allowed in schools

I want to thank you for your arguments in my first debate this truly made my day. To start my rebuttal I will find counterexamples or disprove your claims. 1) You are prepared to state that "school uniforms save both time and money" But that is not exactly true. a) There is many uniforms that cost from 8 to 50$ a piece, meaning 50$ possibly for a single shirt, polo, skirt, pants, etc. ab) There is many types of uniforms i.e. Regular uniforms, rally uniforms, p.e. and formal dress uniforms. Thus causing to pay a whole lot of money for clothes were regular will cheaper. B) The family will still buy regular clothes because since the student will probably want to wear something more comfortable in their free time. Thus defeating the whole "uniforms will save family money" claim. 2) You are prepared to state that uniforms will end a social class discrimination. A) Families who have less money can only afford to pay for a couple complete uniforms options thus making the student wear the same outfit often causing it to get more worn and more used thus causing wear so the outfit may be torn and worn out. And the student may feel embarrassed to know his/her family can not afford better clothes. B) Other students will still find ways to gossip and bully other students. Even with the clothes factors out of the equation kids will still bully that is a given fact that has stood the test of time. 3) You are prepared to state that uniforms may improve student safety. A) There is still going to be a bullying problem causing a unsafe environment B) People can still hide weapons and drugs in backpacks, in their in their waistband of their pants, and cars if they have one. C) Uniforms can still be stolen to. Cited: How much is it.org http://education.newarchaeology.com... and some various opinions asked at my school.

This is because everyone would be wearing the exact same...

    Uniforms

I believe uniforms are vital in school. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, Between the years 2015 and 2016 22% of public schools acquired uniforms. This is because uniforms are believed to help students focus more on education than what they are wearing. If students are wearing expensive clothes at school, They will definitely regret it. The clothes might get stained, Painted on or even ripped. Even with stitching, Expensive clothes look horrible when ripped. Furthermore, Students have fewer chances of getting bullied when wearing uniforms. This is because everyone would be wearing the exact same clothes; therefore, There would be no reason to bully others. No one wants to get bullied for what they like to wear. On trips, Students are supposed to wear school uniforms. When they get lost, It will be easier to find them. It is better than searching for a specific person with clothes anybody can wear. We can't deny that kids adore the thought of not having to decide what to wear each day. Instead of spending hours of time putting together outfits, A student simply puts on their uniform. Chant'e Haskins shared her opinion after going from a school with no uniforms to one with uniforms. She says after wearing the uniform for a whole school year she "was so used to wearing the uniform it did not even bother me anymore. " Chant'e adds she saved time in the morning by not having to pick out an outfit and was able to customize her look with accessories to keep some individuality. Proponents suggest kids who wear school uniforms feel more connected to their school, Encounter less bullying, And have a more professional attitude. All of these factors contribute to more positive behaviour in school. In one school's online survey, About 25% of student respondents said they believe school uniforms would promote positive behaviour. It is generally thought that students who wear school uniforms behave more appropriately in the school environment. They believe that uniforms dictate a stricter atmosphere and that students who wear uniforms are more likely to follow school rules. Again, I must repeat that school uniforms are beneficial in many ways to both the students and the school.

School Uniform: An outfit of clothing to be worn daily to school. "Traditionally, school uniforms have been subdued and professional. Boys' uniforms often consist of dark trousers and light-colored shirt, often with a tie. Girls' uniforms [...] typically consist of a dress or a blouse worn either with a skirt or culottes or under a pinafore." (http://en.wikipedia.org...) Public Schools should not have to wear school uniforms

    1) I don't for one moment think it will eliminate bullying in schools. What I said was that non school uniform was a CONTRIBUTING FACTOR to bullying so by having school uniform you may reduce this. 2) School uniforms can be costly but: a) If schools take the appropriate steps they can find the cheapest solution to school uniform. you can get polo shirts at primark; 3 for 2! b) The school nearest mine pays for the kids uniforms and does so easily... There are much more costly things than uniforms in a school environment. I only have one uniform I just wash it tuesday nights thursday nights and on saturdays... 3) There are loads of other ways to express yourself such as your hairstyle, your jewellery, your shoes, your makeup (for girls), the way you shave (for boys). And there's always non school uniform day's! 4) My polo is white but my school jumper is black and my trousers are black. I don't know any schools with white uniforms they are usually dark coloured for this very reason! In conclusion: School uniforms are bad for the pupil and the family of the pupil for many different reasons. Students can express themselves in other ways! Thanks and good luck.

this thing with the teacher not knowing what is going on...

    school uniforms

my opponent makes the claim that having identical clothes will help when people go out on excursions but my school uses high tech id badges so as to monitor where the students are and when they are there at all times. my opponent also makes the case that the teacher will not know what is going on is a red herring or also known as a way to distract people. this thing with the teacher not knowing what is going on has nothing to do with uniforms but to do with that teacher should be fired for not paying attention to the students needs which by the way is their job. Now on a more serious note bullying is a real thing that real people deal with. when people feel that they are being overwhelmed by everyday school life then get a parent or get an adult that you trust so that they can solve the problem. another thing is you can talk to that person to solve the problem. it is not usually just because of what you are wearing or how you look it is usually a much deeper problem than that. that person may be dealing with serious emotional problems so telling an adult is usually the best thing.

I thank my opponent for participating in this debate. I...

School uniforms ought to be worn in primary and secondary schools.

I thank my opponent for participating in this debate. I will begin by rebutting his contentions and will then move on to my own. ======== "Consider why judges wear judicial robes. Clearly, the judicial system would not disintegrate if judges dresses casually. Nonetheless, it is virtually universally accepted that there is an incremental gain in focusing both the judge and the court proceeding that improves justice." I would argue that the practice of judges wearing judicial uniforms is an unnecessary one, but that is not my main argument. My main point is that this is an improper analogy. Judges lead court hearings, and are the focus of attention. Students are not. A better analogy would be a uniform for the jury. But the jury does not wear a uniform [1], so this analogy in fact works in favor of con; what the jury wears in practice is more analogous to a dress code. A dress code is a "formally or socially imposed standard of dress" [2], and refers to types of clothing more than a specific uniform. I do support a dress code, as it is not appropriate to wear just anything to school, but a uniform is excessive. Back to the analogy, the judge is more analogous to the teacher. So this point argues more that teachers should wear uniforms, not students. "We see also se [sic] this in the practices of the police, military, security guards, airline pilots, nurses (and doctors' white coats), professional chefs, and many private companies, like package delivery services." All the named professions are very specialized. For many of these, the reason for wearing a uniform is clear: so that they are easily recognizable. In a hospital, for example, it would not do to confuse the nurses with the patients. And police should be recognizable so that we can quickly get help from them. But there is no such need for students to be recognizable. "Catholic schools, which mostly have uniforms, succeed better than public schools. There are differences besides uniforms that lead to better performance in these schools, but they all relate to discipline and focus." 1) How is my opponent quantifying success/performance? 2) My opponent has not provided evidence to support these claims. 3) Catholic schools differ from public schools in many ways, and any of these differences could be responsible. An increase in discipline may not be responsible. The main reason is probably parental attitude. Parents who are willing to spend extra money to send their children to private school clearly care about their children's education. It is easy to see how this attitude can lead to an increase in school performance. My opponent cites a study showing a potential correlation between school uniforms and reduced crime rate. However, the study is incomplete. Many policies (schoolwide, citywide, etc) can change in six years, and there is very little evidence that school uniforms were the cause of the change. The study my opponent cited also stated that "there is little research on the effectiveness of school uniforms." [3] Correlation, while something, is far from evidence. Additionally, the credibility of the study is questionable. Why would school uniforms, admitted by my opponent to probably only cause "an incremental gain" in performance, lead to such dramatic changes? Very few policies could cause that sort of change. I would need some proof of the credibility of this study before I would accept this extraordinary evidence. "2) [...] It puts everyone in the same boat so they are more likely to help each other succeed." Why do students not cooperate? Why do they instead compete? Am I supposed to believe that students aren't cooperating because they're wearing different CLOTHING? "This is a reason why players on sports teams wear identical uniforms." A school is not a sports team. If students are made to wear uniforms, it will emphasize the divisions between different schools or school districts. In sports, these divisions are necessary, but a school is not a sports team. Uniforms are potentially harmful for this reason. Addressing the original point, my opponent seems to be saying that uniforms improve sense of unity. Even if they do, how is this beneficial to a scholastic setting? Fast-paced communal reactions are unnecessary. "3) It removes the distractions of fashion trends" The concept of fashion trends being distracting is pure fiction. Distractions occur due to boring material or boring teachers, and school uniforms don't fix that. "4) [...] reduce clothing costs." I hardly see how buying an extra article of clothing could reduce costs. Yes, the school system can provide uniforms for lower-income families, but the money has to come from somewhere – and that somewhere is taxes. Why not skip a step and just shift more of the tax burden to the rich? Chasing fashion fads may be expensive, but it's optional. Parents do not have to buy so much clothing for their children. Additionally, children will want to have fashionable clothing for outside of school: who would wear a school uniform all the time? So in the end, no money is saved. *** My opponent cites a study by Mrunsma and Rokquemore: "The key defects are that the study contained almost no public schools, and even more importantly, never considered data from the same school before and after the policies were implemented." The study used the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988, a nationally representative set of schools [4]. While it is true that they did not compare schools before and after uniform policies were implemented, this is irrelevant. Firstly, they reduced bias by accounting for other variables such as school location. Secondly, comparing schools before and after is still biased because it is highly likely that something besides school uniform policy changed between the first and second studies. "If dramatic improvement could be achieved effortlessly, the "reforms" would surely be adopted universally, which they were not." This is self-defeating: if school uniforms could achieve dramatic improvement, they would be adopted universally, which they were not. ======== The character limit approaches, so I will keep my contentions short. It is worth noting that several potential contentions have already been addressed above: for instance, I could make the point that school uniforms are expensive, but I already made that point in response to my opponent's fourth contention. Pre-Contention: Unless school uniforms are proven to be more beneficial than detrimental, there is no reason to use them. All else being equal, a school uniform is an unnecessary entity. Contention 1: School uniforms restrict the students' self-expression. Many students feel that the best way to express themselves is through their form of dress, and if they are required to wear school uniforms, it stifles creativity and self-expression. I concede that uniforms are not the only means of self-expression, but students will still feel stifled and many will be unsuccessful at finding alternative means of expression. Some students may even use inappropriate means of self-expression such as painting graffiti on school property, rebounding and dressing overly inappropriately, or bullying or harming other students. Contention 2: School uniforms greatly limit the potential for diversity. Cultural uniqueness, for instance, is usually promoted through clothing. Contention 3: School uniforms enforce conformity, and conformity is stifling to creativity and originality. Even the limited conformity enforced by school uniforms is still stifling. Conformity leads to stagnation. ======== I thank my opponent for this debate and look forward to his response. students should not were uniforms in school

I accept School uniforms are important as students don't worry about being judged for their clothes, they are all wearing the same uniform and therefore there is one less thing bullies can use against you: "In America, where a majority of schools do not have a uniform, roughly 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students. This might not be directly linked to what they're wearing, but having a uniform can be a safety net for many students who might otherwise suffer from bullying. A strict uniform gives the impression that rules are strict too, perhaps helping maintain a sense of order at school."-The Guardian Sure, the bullies will pick on people for different reasons but this is one less reason for them to pick on people! There have also been many non-uniform days for charity here and everyone gets distracted when we have our own clothes, uniforms stop us from getting distracted. It's also great to clean as you can have it cleaned at the weekend ready for the week whereas with clothes you might not even find something you can wear and can't even go to school due to having no clothes to wear into school. That's when you could be bullied for many of the reasons Pro has posted. Additionally, wearing a school uniform identifies you with your school; it's really useful on field trips and other events where pupils may be lost! To sum up; Uniforms are essential as they can reduce bullying and create a sense of identity to the school Source(s): http://www.theguardian.com...

School Pupils Should Be Required To Wear School Uniforms

The main reason that uniforms are actively in place is to control the sexual "distractions" on campus between the sexes. I agree with all of your positions, but where I'm from, the schools could care less about school spirit or equality. In fact, I believe my school system is rather sexist with their dress codes and I've just recently written an essay about it in my English class. Most dress codes in the United States are purely based off of male sexualization. For example, the censorship of basic things such as legs. Many people argue that men find them attractive, but I believe that women find arms very attractive, and the thought of censoring a body part so simple as arms is ridiculous, like legs aren't simple and necessary. I don't think dress codes and uniforms should be in place because they are mostly one sided and unfair.
