    Uniforms in school

Salutations. People can express themselves thought there attire, uniforms take away that method of expression. This is not world ending, but school is when people have to slowly find out how they are and what they want to be, so losing one of the ways to explore who you are is not great. Moving on, uniforms do not mean that there will be respect for everyone. They do stop bullying based of clothes, in general, but kids will find other things to pick on that may be more damaging than what someone wants to wear. Uniforms are also not the most effective way to save time, and if one does not want to worry about what to wear, they could wear a similar outfit every day. It would have a compatible effect to a uniform in time saving.

However, large volume manufacturers are producing very...

    School uniforms are good

    1) High Cost of School Uniforms- Uniforms are not cheap and this is a good reason to be against school uniforms. Because children are constantly growing, there is a captive market for new school clothes and manufacturers take advantage. However, large volume manufacturers are producing very cheap clothing for younger pupils at the moment so this argument against school uniforms may not stand up to too much scrutiny. 4) Freedom of Expression is stifled by School Uniforms- A uniform breeds uniformity. We need free thinking children to become the thinkers of tomorrow, not drones who will continue making the mistakes of pervious generations. When we argue against school uniforms we argue against an education system that seeks to produce workers and for an education system that seeks to produce enlightened fully rounded human beings. 3) School Uniforms do not cut down on bullying - No matter what you dress students in, they will always find a way to pass judgment upon their peers. The clothes are not the root cause of bullying and therefore the bullying will continue, regardless of dress policy. No matter what clothing rules apply, students will always find ways to pass judgment upon each other. Also allowing students to choose between a blue and red polo shirt doesn't reduce gangs. Also gangs don't have to show their colors to engage in activities. My source is http://www.angelfire.com...

I appreciate you sharing your personal opinions on school...

    School uniforms should be required

I hope our debate goes well, and thank you for bringing up this topic. I appreciate you sharing your personal opinions on I appreciate you sharing your personal opinions on school uniforms, but I have to disagree with you. Clothing may be one of the best ways for students to express themselves, but even you, yourself stated that it is not the only way. "students are able to be themselves without being distracting" The above comment is a direct comment posted by yourself. With girls being forced to call home for a change of clothes, and boys yanking up their pants to prevent "sagging" every day, the dress code is being violated every single day, despite the strict rules put before us. All of these violations are distractions towards other students. A study recently released found school uniform policies helped to improve school safety and student achievement, including grades and test scores, in three diverse public school districts. In light of the increased emphasis on student achievement since the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, "Implementing a School Uniform Policy: A Case Study of Three Districts" provides additional evidence that school uniform policies can be beneficial to student learning. Five key and consistent findings emerged in "Implementing a School Uniform Policy", which focused on the Denver Public Schools in Denver, Colorado; the Aldine Independent School District outside of Houston, Texas; and District of Baltimore City Public Schools: 1) Regular use of uniforms can help to improve school safety; 2) Regular use of uniforms can help to improve students' classroom behavior; 3) The affordability of school uniforms versus everyday clothing contributes to wide acceptance of the adoption of such a policy; 4) Uniforms can help to reduce student competition and concerns about "fitting in"; 5) Uniforms may contribute to improved student outcomes, including grades and test scores.

Uniforms should be worn in school

By saying "Cliques lead to all sorts of problems, such as bulling, exclusion, and more." you are saying that not wear uniforms can lead to bullying and the act of excluding which is as same as my point. Thanks for supporting me anyways. The fact that you say that uniforms are just there to identify that this member belongs to this school, club, etc. you are absolutely correct. God made everyone equal and it won't make a big difference in school if you wear school uniform because: 1. You are representing your school 2. You get to be noticed by the community that you belong to such a school society 3. Depending on your actions, nature, and manners your society, parents, and relatives might be impressed and be honored to be a proud parent of a student at that school. Remembering that we are all equal, I believe that school should set up policies to wear uniforms in school. Back to The CON

In the UK, one can purchase an entire school uniform for...

    School uniforms are good

The first point that my opponent brings up is that school uniforms are too expensive, particularly as children grow out of them. This is simply not true, especially when the uniforms are basic. In fact, according to experts, uniform prices cannot drop any further while still maintaining a profit. In the UK, one can purchase an entire school uniform for less than 5, approximately $8 US currency. When compared to designer clothing, one can see that an entire outfit for $8 is much less likely to break the bank than a $50 pair of jeans. In addition to the already low price, most schools that require uniforms will provide them for free to students who are unable to afford them. My opponent also argues that individuality and freedom of expression are compromised by uniforms. My counter-point is: The clothes do not make the person. If a student cannot be an individual without altering his or her physical appearance, then that student has no real individuality to speak of. When everybody wears the same thing, personality tends to become the distinguishing factor. A student who is required to wear a uniform may indeed come out of the experience with more developed individuality in non-physical facets. Schools with uniforms are also required to make exceptions for clothing worn for religious beliefs and some even let students opt out of the uniform altogether. My opponent is under the impression that school uniforms will not cut down bullying among students, but with a little logical thought and statistics from previous studies I believe I can prove otherwise. First, my thought process. With school uniforms, students are unable to tell by sight which students are wealthy and which are poor. Since two of the main reasons students are bullied are appearance and social status, it follows that minimizing these factors in the school environment will also minimize bullying. Now for the statistics. The Long Beach unified school district in California mandated school uniforms in 1994 and in just 5 years saw significant results. Regarding the school system, crime rates dropped 91%, school suspensions dropped 90%, sex offences dropped 96%, and vandalism dropped 69%. These results may be in part because students feel more business-like in a uniform and are able to stay more school-oriented. I thank my opponent for his engaging argument and look forward to our next round of debate. School uniforms should be required.

A school district in North Jersey is reporting that implementing school uniforms is directly reducing bullying. At this school, even students are commenting directly that uniforms are decreasing bullying.'[http://www.ourfamilyworld.com...] Sure kids will want to show all their friends about the new nike shows they got, but what if they're friends can't afford it. It will be pressurizing to them in a way for them to buy the new nike shows just because their friend has it so they can be 'cool' aswell. School Uniforms get the schools students to make them look the same regardless of their wealth which I find can be very advantaging to kids from disadvantaged families.

Schools aren't there just to fill students full of facts...

    School Uniforms

Uniforms are worn in most aspects of life e.g. work, sports, recreational groups, etc. Uniforms can be highly stylized e.g. military, religious, team, etc, or socially conventional in appearance e.g. suits. The school uniform allows students to develop a common identity, to develop cohesion as a body, projects a "professional" image onto the community to which it belongs, and removes the appearance of social disparity. Schools aren't there just to fill students full of facts and figures, but also to prepare them for their future working lives and living within the society to which they will eventually contribute. I agree that, "an outfit doesn't help you learn" because, whether the "outfit" is a uniform or non-uniform, it is not a teaching aid. However the benefits of wearing a school uniform contribute to making a more conducive environment for educational purposes.

I agree with you on the point of kids all being dressed...

    School Uniforms

Thank you, I appreciate you accepting my challenge, and offer the following counters: Yes, it is true there will be less immodesty in schools with uniforms, but is that the school's responsibility? Do you want how people dress to be taught to them by a school? People should be allowed to have their own individuality. If you really want to show school spirit, schools have one or two colors designated as that school's colors. You can wear those. It isn't fair to make others wear them if they don't want to. I agree with you on the point of kids all being dressed the same, therefore removing the bullying based on clothes-but richer kids will still bully the poorer kids because they don't have the latest video game, Ipod, car, whatever. That sort of thing isn't based off clothes alone. And who says they want to show pride in their school? Again, it isn't the school's right to mandate that. I know that whenever my school wants us to show pride, nobody really does, because they don't want to show pride in a school that seems very poorly run. I would also like to bring up money. You probably know that as it is, schools get a fair portion of taxes. If schools suddenly start wearing uniforms, the funding necessary for schools will increase. Schools will need the money to buy uniforms for the hundreds of thousands of kids attending schools everywhere in the U.S.A. Nobody wants a tax increase. I look forward to reading your next comments. Thank you.

I concede that uniforms do take away from the...

    school uniforms

Firstly, Thank you for letting me debate this issue with you. I percieve that I am arguing in favor of a school uniform, and will do so. I concede that uniforms do take away from the individuality that someone can express, but Con has not shown why this is so important. I will base my argument on the divisions that arise from a lack of uniforms. The lack of uniform causes students to divide themselves into groups and cliques amongst themsleves which isolates some people from others. For example, rich people are able to wear more ostentatious garments, which the poor cannot afford and hence is a point for the children to discriminate. Another instance is when school athletes have their uniform and the jersey which apparently gives them a higher social status as they recieve more attention. Considered from an educational perspective, since we are talking about school, what place does wealth or physique have to do with one's ability to learn? That is why I propose to enforce school uniforms as it prevents students from discriminating each other on the basis of such, with such trivial matters that do not involve the educational purpose of school. Yes, individuality is being sacrificed, but I can simplify your voting to this one question: Are the potential lives of the poor, nerd or other social outcasts that are being saved is worth more than the individuallity sacrificed?
